NJ Speeding Ticket NY License + Insurance

Hey guys, I bought an M3 two days ago. It's definitely a lot of fun; unfortunately, while passing through NJ today, a state officer caught me allegedly going 98 on the I-95. I did some research and I don't believe the points transfer over to an NY license. I got a ticket for 98 on a 65, careless driving, and obstructing view for my Escort. Regardless that the points don't transfer over, would insurance be able to find this on my record somehow? Also, should I bother fighting it or would paying the fine be more financially logical? Altogether, it was about $500 in fines. Thanks guys!

Sorry OP, but you got what you deserve. Take it to the track next time. Excessive speeding & careless driving on public roads are dangerous.

Pay the fine and never speed again or drive erratically.

if it was your first offense, you should just go to court at the appointed date. you will be given the option to do a plea deal before the court session begins and could get a good amount of your fines / points waved. If you have 6 or more points, you will likely end up with just 2 afterwards and the respective fine.

I would say it might be worthwhile to invest into a traffic lawyer. The insurance increase can be huge.

You should lose your car, your license, your kids, your job, and even your dog. Speeding is a crime against humanity. Now to answer your question, get an attorney and fight it.

Dont know about NJ carrying over to NY, but a long while back I got a red light ticket in miami while I was living in NY and the points did not carry over nor was my insurance increased. That was circa 1997 maybe the rules have changed.

As an example, our live-in babysitter has two speeding tickets on her record in the last three years (occurred over a year and a half ago before she worked for us). We added her to our auto insurance policy when she came to work for us. Between the two tickets and her being less than 25yo, our auto insurance premiums would have gone up by $5500 a year unless we shopped around for a new carrier.

I have Liberty Mutual. They explained to me that they do not go by points and do not care if anything such as time or traffic safety school takes points off. They look at the violations and make their judgement. However DMV does not contact them, they search every one to three years depending on your prior record with them. I got a pretty big speeding ticket ~18 months ago and so far nothing from insurance.(81 not 98!)

In NJ you can, once every three years, pretty much automatically change most tickets to the "no points" careless driving offense but they ADD ~$300 for the privilege. But maybe he added careless driving so you would be stuck.

LAWYER UP!!!

My attempt at humor. I find the moralizing when someone admits to speeding a bit over the top.

Why not put governors on all cars that will not allow them to go over the speed limit? You could also program them so that they are automatically turned off when you're on an approved track. Of course, when on said track the car could automatically send that info to BMW so your warranty could be voided. A solution to make the nannies happy.

The only time a ticket in NJ will mess up you NY license is if you don't pay for the ticket. Otherwise just pay for it and get on with driving

You guys are funny. You Own a sports car and bash others because they were speeding. People normally cruise 70-80 mph on i95, basicaly taking the car to red line in any gear would be enough for a cop to pull you over and give you the same tickets. Im sure you guys have done that before. If you haven't than should have bought a 328.Take it ez on the guy and answer his question.

Op, lawyer up just in case. Troopers are remorseless on speeders.

From the "horse's mouth":

http://www.dmv.ny.gov/tickets.htm

If I get a ticket for a moving violation in another state, do I receive points on my NYS driver license?

The NYSDMV does not record out-of-state violations committed by NYS drivers in other jurisdictions. The exceptions are alcohol-related violations, drug-related violations, and moving violations committed in Quebec or Ontario. Under special agreements, traffic convictions in Quebec or Ontario are recorded on NYS driver license records and carry points. Except for violations in Ontario and Quebec, points are not added to your NYS record for out-of-state violations.

If you do not respond to a ticket or fail to pay a fine for a moving violation that you committed in any state except Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon or Wisconsin, the DMV suspends your NYS driver license until you respond to the ticket or pay the fine. If a driver from a state except these six states fails to respond to a traffic ticket issued in NYS, their driver license will be suspended until the driver responds to the traffic ticket in NYS.

It ALL makes sense now. Zie Germans have less speed limits on the autobahn due to their experience with crimes against humanity.

Oh please....spare me. Like we all have a track next to our house that we just hop onto after work for a couple of laps. I drive 90-100mph almost every day. You just have to know have to do it properly and safely. I have been driving for over 30 years and have never come even remotely close to being in a speed related accident, so I believe my thinking and driving habits have stood the ultimate test of time.

And please don't get me started on "the law", etc, etc, etc.

Pay the fine or get a lawyer. In both case you will still have to pay the ticket at the end. You can also invest in a radar detector.

I don't disagree that we're all law abiding citizens and drive the speed limit. We all push our cars now and then and we know it's a gamble. Speeding slightly over the limit is fine like 70-80 as you stated. But when you get caught doing 98 in a 65 then I consider that excessive and dangerous.

At those speeds on public roads so many things can go wrong, including your ability to control the car or react in time to an emergency situation.

We should all practice "safe" speeding but 98 is pushing the envelope IMO. In Ontario if you get caught going 50 km/hr over the limit it's an automatic license suspension on the spot, $10k fine and they impound your car.
