The STi is great and has serious potential. I owned an STi ('11) and sometimes I really miss it. The AWD is amazing and can handle any weather (with appropriate tires).

I am up in Michigan and will be putting my 08 E90 sedan up for sale today
Its loaded - Jerez / Fox / prep / tech / 19's / - literally every option. 6 Speed. Its in excellent condition, and CLEAN. I've had it through 4 years of infant and kids, and will tell you this car is IDEAL for your situation. I have a 5 year old and 3 year old, and we take my car all the time - but no food or juice in my car plus shoe's come off I've taken it up north for trips to petosky, etc with the full family. I fit a full stroller in the trunk. I even has an eisenmann sport exhaust on, which is ok for the family. What else can you ask for? PM me if you want to talk. As I'm typing this I"m thinking why am I even selling it lol.. Dont buy an STI or EVO. While they are nice cars, they are just nowhere near the level of what this M3 offers. This V8 will be a classic. Mike

I went from an 07 STi (modded to 370whp on stock turbo) to the E92 M3. While they are completely different animals, I still miss the STi. The sound, power delivery, AWD goodness....however, I can't see myself going back to an Sti. I've got three kids and we manage with the car seats an all. It's really not that bad. An STi would definitely be a step in the wrong direction. GTR though....that's next on my list

Great feedback. That's why I posted on this forum. I would only do the sti and not the Evo. The sti would only be the hatch version and I would modify it for sure. I will Probably keep the m3 for a while longer. The spending 50 grand thing was only related to the m3 sedan. I don't want to spend more money for what I feel like is the same car I've already had for almost four years. I would go with a new s4 or maybe a 335 sedan if was spending more money and wanted a NEW car.

Wouldn't even consider it. I have a newer X5 and M3 and its just me so I say hang on to your X5 and keep your M3. No need to switch it up at all.

I bought a mid size sedan when I started a family then traded it in for an E92 when I found myself infrequently transporting my children. The coupe is practical enough for my purposes. I'd counsel you to hold off trading the coupe for the sedan until you determine it does not meet your needs.

Personally I would never go back to my STI hatch after owning my M3, the M is just superior in everything, + the engine in the new STIs is very unreliable, I had an 09 and blew up 4 with just stg2 and my neighbor has a 2011 and he blew up 2 and that's just to name a few! Also in stock form I thougt the STI was the most BORING car to drive!

^That's true about the engines - they definitely had some issues.. The STi pistons (for the newer GR models) are made of glass or something. Any detonation and you're done. Luckily mine didn't blow up, but I've heard stories.

i had a sti for 6 years i loved it but the bmw is such a better car all around. its the small things that make it so much better keyless start, less road noise, feel of the interior i could go on for days. If u lived were is snowed 7 months out of the year and needed a car to beat on sti for sure. anything other then that bmw all day.

e93 M3. Lower the top to take the car seat in and out.

Just spent a morning of spirited driving in my friend's 2010 Sti hatch which is equipped with a Cobb Accessport (not sure of specific specs).
Interesting little car. Extremely heavy clutch, decent steering feel, pretty narrow power band compared to the M3... and terrible brakes! After 45mins or so of hard braking there was noticeable fade. This made me pretty nervous. My friend loved driving my M3, as he had never driven one before. I would have absolutely loved the STi if I was say a Freshman in college and it was my first performance car. However the Impreza heritage really shows when just cruising around. The interior looks like it is from a $15k car (because it is.) Also there are lots of rattles etc and the sound system sucks. I should add that he has a totally custom sound system with subs etc and it sounds much worse than my M3 EPS system. I asked him what he thought of the M3 stereo and he replied he didn't need it... he had the windows down enjoying the Dinan exhaust note. I should mention that I had never driven a subaru of any type before this. The closest thing I have owned in the past was a 1990 Eagle Talon TSi AWD turbo back in college. Anyway, it is a cool looking little car and fun to drive for a couple hours but glad it won't stay in my driveway!

Yes I would get an STI if I wanted a cheaper less expensive car that was still fun to drive and relatively fast.
Nothing wrong with going to an STI if you want to save some cash IMO.

No comparison between the two the only thing I am going to miss going from an STI to an M3 is the AWD. Well and the money in my pocket
If you want a second car that is fun to drive, great functionality and good in any weather condition then the STI is a really good option for the money. As to the engine there have been some people with blown ringlands due to detonation. The stock tune is not very good (I tuned mine to stage 1 after 500 miles). I'm coming up on 60k miles with no issues, it's been a very reliable DD for me. The car does need a few upgrades to make it feel better (stage 1 or 2) really ups the power/tq to where it should be. Some sway bars, steering rack bushings, alignment and SS brake lines all fix some of the stock issues Ive found. If it's going to be your main car you are really going to miss what the M3 brings to your drive. |

If it was less than 28k brand new, yes I would get one. I dont really keep up on the STI's but I saw an awesome lowered hatch back a while ago. I hoped on the website and priced one out. $39,444. Only options were Nav and home link. You have to be fucking kidding me. I checked one out in person. I just dont get the hype at all. I have a GT-R and a few other toys, they wouldnt even let me drive the thing. If it was below 30k Id say MAYBE. And thats a tough MAYBE.

I actually love WRX (Sti or non-sti). Although they look terrible, it's fun easy tuning turbo, reliable, 4wd make it a perfect all year daily toy for me. As a matter of fact, i'm starting to save money to buy a cheap wrx as a DD. |

at the end of the day, E90 M3 is still a compromise..the back is a real tight fit. It'll work until your kids grow up to about 12 years old...which, depending on your timeline might work for you.
AT the end of the day, if you need a "people carrier", get a people carrier. If you really need a Subie, get a bigger Subi - a-la Forrester or Legacy wagon The STi is NOT a comfortable car for the family. |
