Size of holes and placement was covered in the thread. A member used 9/64" for the hole and 1 'oclock to drill.

I'm half way through the project (someone took my dremel from the garage) and so far so good. I did not butches the stock knob at all. In fact, I can still convert to stock anytime I want up until the point when I cut the boot. However, I had to cut the wires (on the stock shift knob) in order to pull out the LED board. There simply isn't enough room to pull the snap connectors through, especially with that stupid wire wrap around the wires. I will rewire them later on. BTW I took many pictures and will have good documentation tomorrow - when I plan to finish this.

The project is not hard, just needs some thought and patience. I will post when I finish with pics and instructions ... there is a great way to remove the LED board using two paper clips

Hey Guys.. If anyone needs the illumination from a stock oem shift knob, I have mine for sale. I took it out and decided not to use it so its up for sale. I already did all the hard work to extract it.

I'll buy that wire off you if you're willing to part it out?
Otherwise, anybody know where you can buy just the 2001+ wire connector? I know you can just cut off the wire from the stock knob but I want to leave my stock knob untouched (I'm just anal that way)

Then I think you have to specify 6 speed. But all of these knobs are universal to BMW gear shift levers.

I taped the whole thing up to protect it and the dremel skipped and rubbed the top leather.

I've been talking with Andy at LeatherZ and if you send in your white connector and your shift pattern the price is $175. It seems he has a new LED light knob, I've heard complaints about the old style.

Anyone have the new style?

Wondering if it would make sense to loan, for a small fee, my screwed up knob to people on the fence whether or not this is a worthy improvement.

BMW does not sell the connector by itself for some reason.

Not sure why you would need a new wire. No reason to cut it.

I bought a illuminated zhp knob but it only comes with free end wires. I need that wire connector so that I can solder it to the wires on the knob and be able to connect it to my stock unit. I might have stumbled on how to get the connector. If it works I'll post the solution

If you can just source the pins, then you can use your stock connector.

Don't mind the picture he has for the ad. I've messaged him asking about it and he said it's an old pic and he says the actual job is better. I also asked a member on here how it was and he said it was good too. LeatherZ sells them too but I didn't want to spend $180 for it.

Couple people have bought this one and like it so far. Much easier than modding one, that's for sure.

Yea I didn't want to bother doing it myself plus I wanted to keep my stock knob intact

$180? Try $290! Andy is charging an additional $115 if he has to supply the shift pattern. If you want oem connector, that's another $25 bringing the total up to $315! Then add $8 for shipping...$323!!!

I ruined one last week...kind of...I can do this, just don't have the right tools. I am setting up a drill press and will be able to knock these out and maybe sell them to the community for a small charge. Let me see how long it takes and I'll report back.

You can mail me your insert and your connector and I will use them. Or get the Pre-2001 connector kit I sell (which takes 2 minutes to retrofit with no wire cutting). Then the price is $175. Better yet, I will take $15 off the price if you mail me your insert.

Have you received the ebay lit-ZHP knob yet? - curious to know how it looks - I was about to start, but honestly, at this price, there is no need to do this work myself.

Thanks,
Brian

I've actually bought the one from ebay and its good quality and the LED board they use matches OEM with even distribution.
