Absolutely nothing in the winter beats an Aspen ski trip IMO. Only, fly private cuz the airport is a huge dilemma. The weather up there can change in a second and the airport will shut down absolutely every commercial flight without hesitation and trust me, you can get stuck up there for a week. I guess that is not sooo bad though.

Thanks for the heads up.

So, like I said, neither my wife nor I have ever been skiing before. Do we need to buy a bunch of special clothing or equipment? If so, what do we need to get and what can we rent?

No special equipment is really needed. Ski pants, a jacket, long underwear and gloves is really all you need. I would say buy it all there, but everything is sooo expensive once you get there. It is really best to buy in your hometown. Once you get there and judge the conditions you can decide whether or not you need extra equipment. Man, I am getting excited! Maybe we will run into each other up there this winter.

EDIT: You can rent your skis, poles and anything else you need at the slopes or at any sports shop in town. They will size you up and give you everything you need : ) If you are set on Aspen, I can give you excellent restaurant recommendations. PM me.

yea...my return flight was canceled out of aspen. i was flying united. i didn't mind, though...$10M house for another few days, why not?! tom- let me know if you want to charter a jet out there...i'll go, split some costs. i've got a house to stay in.

the problem with the aspen airport is the only approach/takeoff path is from one direction. mountains obscure the southern end of the field, thus only allowing south landings. aspen's airport is known among pilots to be one of the most difficult airports IN THE WORLD to get in and out of (kai tak in hong kong being the pinnacle of difficult airports, of course). during the winter, the winds are predominately out of the north making it almost necessary to make tailwind landings, which is a big no-no for flying, but can be done. not to mention the physical challenges of the field itself...2% grade, 200 ft elevation rise between the approach end and the end of the runway, winds, mountains, narrow valley to shoot through, etc. if there wasn't so much money flowing through aspen, there wouldn't be an airport, basically. as a pilot myself, i'd still love to fly in and out of there, but it's like one of those things a pilot wants to conquer to say he's done it.

Honestly, I prefer March. You will get plenty of snow without too much powder and enough sunshine to allow you to ski in a t shirt without freezing. Also, there is some extra great nightlife then as most of the colleges are on spring break. Ratatat played at the base of Aspen mountain last year in the snow (March 27th I think). Great times!

my buddy's house is literally the first driveway on the right off cooper and midland on the south side of town. really nice place, one of the best views of the entire city of aspen in aspen city proper, little lake, etc. doesn't get much better unless you're up on red mountain, of course. i'll be back for new years, can't wait! hopefully this year, some crotchety old man won't call in fake bomb threats shutting down the city. that really sucked last year, but we were so drunk it didn't matter anyway. we ended up cooking bratwurst and getting wasted off dom perignon. pics to prove it....

Hahaha, I remember you texting me about that Blake. Looks like it worked out pretty good though.

We should get a bunch of us up there at the same time. I keep saying I want to go skiing, but I never follow through.

Looks like FUN! You all are literally two blocks from my buddy's house. It is the first driveway on the left after the lake in Aspen Club. Small world. There are nice views from there for sure! We should all meet up there this year for a little Kenichi and Belly Up action LOL. Damn I want to go right now. F Houston.

Yeah, most of us need to get away for a little while.

Any more word from the adjuster?
