Per AP today:

Californians woke up to sticker shock Friday as overnight gasoline prices jumped by up to 20 cents a gallon in some areas, prompting some stations to close and others to charge more than $5 a gallon.

In Southern California, the price jumped 20 cents a gallon to $4.53 in Ventura and 19 cents to nearly $4.54 in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area.

In many areas, prices have jumped 40 cents in a week.

Actually, I'm not complaining about paying for gas. I know our gas prices are some of the cheapest in the world. It was just the fact that it went up over 10% in 5 days. Had it gone up over a month, it probably wouldn't be as big of an issue.

AAA says gas is down nationally by 5 cents, if you exclude CA.

Per LA Times today:

Skyrocketing gasoline prices caused some local service stations to shut off their pumps Thursday while others shocked customers with overnight price increases of 30 cents or more.

California's fuel industry isn't running out of gasoline — supplies are only 2.5% lower than this time last year — but recent refinery and pipeline mishaps sent wholesale prices to all-time highs this week. As a result, some station owners weren't buying fuel for fear they couldn't sell it. Those who did buy simply kicked prices higher and bet customers would understand.

I'm not sure if you've been paying attention then-or you have a great station that is forgetting to increase prices? I paid $4.21 two weeks ago for 91 at Shell here in the SF Bay. I filled my S2000 three days ago for $4.37. Last night I filled the M3 and it was $4.57.

Thats not good, I feel bad for the people this especially hurts. That would include those not fortunate enough to drive a nice performance/luxury vehicle and don't give a crap about cars. I probably justify the cost much easier than someone just trying to get to work.

If that was the case I wouldn't mind gas staying above $5.00. Maybe get some of the large SUV's off the road as well.

Yes gas prices in Europe are outrageous, that is why on my August/September Euro trip I took the Eurostar and Deutsche Bahn (DB) RailPass as my transportation ... whenever I noted a peek of the Autobahn from the train, I found it to contain less traffic ... in London I noted more bicycles and motorbikes then in the past.

I've never paid more than $70 on any of my BMW's, and that was during the absolute worst of the recession in 08. I feel for you guys.

You'd complain if you knew I'm about to go fill up my M3 for $3.7 per gallon of premium shortly. One of the perks of living in SC I guess

Having said that, I totally agree with you. That's what made my decision to get an M3 much easier. Who knows where I'm going to end up in a few years (could be Europe). At under $5 a gallon, I'll gladly take the hit. I read that the average price per gallon in Italy is now $12 per gallon (huge taxes to offset tanking economy).

I wonder how bad the supply crunch will get for the California blend gas. If it's too bad for too long, maybe we'll finally get 93 octane gas in California (instead of paying an extra $1.00 a gallon for lower octane gas)?

Well, IF it really reduced traffic it would probably offset the cost. Sitting in bumper to bumper traffic isn't great for mileage. Unfortunately any decreses in traffic will be minor and transient. People MIGHT forgo driving to the mall that day, etc., but few can take more than a few days off work/"work from home" at a company that doesn't really allow it.

I also agree that those who are in the marginal financial condition get hurt the most by this. Oil speculators once again driving the cost up.

I guess that's the risk we take for a capitalistic (or as close as you can get) economy. I'd take it over communism anytime.

Don't count on it. CA's laws regarding oxidants always seem to supercede most shortages. That is why we keep getting blasted by these short term regional shortages. There is no where else to get this blasted "californicated gas".

I'm thinking more along the lines of if our CA gets to $6/gallon (and stays there) while the rest of the country is paying $4/gallon, there might be some public outcry (and, likely, political action after some time).

Definitely not counting on it, though, and it wouldn't happen quickly.
