BMW Sales Fall 22%

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...020401175.html

Interesting...a lot of other auto manufacturers have lowered prices significantly in the past two months...I wonder if we'll see the same at BMW.

The link you posted states they met a sales record in 2007. The story here is that sales in January fell 22%.

Actually the X6 will help BMW company in profit because it is stylist body chasis. Power? they have alot of Power. they will come in two different engine. V8 or a Inline 6 .. BOth engine come with Twin turbo. V8 come with 400 HP. and Inline6 probably using 335i engine (n54 engine.).. Look at Nissian Luxury division. Infinite Care. Their version of suv have been selling well in the us market. Their FX version. lol

In my personal opinion. X6 will try to completing with Porsche Cheyenne car and Audi suv..

I dont know if u have not aware of bmw way of design their car. In the past, BMW designed their car more sporty looking. orginal BMW was for performance. in the late 20. they build air planes engine. later on they build MOtorcyle.

BMW have realized that if they continue to build sporting looking car. they will not capture the female and 30 to 50 years old group. They have changed their way of design their body chasis. The old E36/7 Z3 was the beginning of girly looking design. I mean female and 30 to 50 years old business man group.

Just look at the e90 2006 N52 ( 325i ). does it look like it trying to capture women and old business man type. Look at the new M3. they did not change the body chasis. It does not look mean anymore (my opinion)

The new X6 will have increase the profile. For the year of 2007, the main reasons why the sale was down because 1st gas Price and Issue with the 335i series. 335i in the 2007 was their first in 10 years to have twin turbo. you got LImp mode issue, Turbo related issue. YOu got overheatting issue. YOu got car stall because their fuel pump messed up. they got high temperature because some car does not have oil cooler.

Remember this in california, we had gas price hike up to nearly about 4.25/ gallon in some area. for example Central California. Fwy i-5 N going pass bakerfield.

BMW they are well know for their gass eatting car. lol Unlike the HOnda and toyota. i know a few people when to HOnda Dealership want to sell their car cause they dont want to pay high gas price

I really hope that this means lease rates in March will drop significantly.

Is there any information in particular to what models didn't sell as well as expected?

Well it's expected that January should be slow due to the holidays the month before. Also because of the rates for newer model year cars, people are waiting for rates to drop before buying.

No, not -22% compared to the previous month, but compared to January last year. I think it's the perception that a recession is coming. Luxury car sales get hit hard at times like this, and I doubt BMW is alone in feeling the pinch.

You seriously think there has been a sales decrease because of 335i engine issues?? I bet less than one percent of potential buyers know about this issue. Also, fuel economy may play a small role, but hey 19/30 or whatever it is isn't that bad. I think it has to do more with recession...

You guys need to read the article.....

Low inventory, fewer cars, less selection, lower sales....

It is a forecasting issue from BMW.

And you need to spend some time with retail sales execs, they always have an excuse as to why sales are down.

My favorite often heard excuse is the weather...yet when sales pick-up it's never because the weather is better, it's because of the superior ability of the execs in regards to product. Oh my other favorite from a sliding company is sales were only down 5% this year, up from down 20% the year before. Ignoring of course that the 20% down the year before became the new benchmark for that month...

Some excuses are valid, others aren't. We'll see what happens over the course of the year, but you can bet if the year is down they won't blame it on themselves.

And you can usually smell it when execs pile it on. If they are giving forward guidance they will exceed 2008 sales coupled with a reasonable explanation why January is down, it is reasonable.

If Feb is bad month then we should get concerned.

It's very easy to understand why BMW's sales are falling, it's two simple reasons.

No.1 / Bangle's design has not meet with much favour from new or existing customers.

No.2 / The competition have got better.

With the exception being the 3 series which is holding it's own all other versions are down, some are down a little and others down a lot. Even the new X5 isn't meeting BMW's expectations.

The only car that is bucking the trend is a car without a BMW badge on it, the Mini's sales are up, year on year.

Hell even the Koreans are producing some pretty decent cars now-a-days.

If you are hell bent on writing a post designed to spark a holy war, you should be more subtle about it.....

For eg. if I wanted to get an Audi fanboi to react to falling sales.... I might write something like

"No wonder why Audi sales are falling, you will understeer horribly and crash into a tree and die a horrible flaming death while your toddler is roasting like a suckle pig in the back seat".

Something like that mate

Agreed, though I'd give it to end of Q1 to suspect and investigate reasons with Q2 being the confirmation and sales incentives to reverse the trend while looking hard at any other competitive reasons for future product development.
