What to do....
Hey everyone, new member here.
Currently own a 11' VW GTI and put my deposit down on a 2013 BMW HP4 three weeks ago. The bike is still in germany being made. It'll polly beat me to the states because i'm stuck here in afghanistan with no word on when to return. As usual with every deployment. I'm absolutely infatuated with the M3 and always have been. Its always been a financial reason of why i never owned one. But now after saving for a while i have a choice to make. 1. Keep my GTI and pay cash for the HP4. "Hatchback + Bike" or 2. Use the money for the bike "almost $24k" and put that down on a M3 plus trade in the GTI. "I'll break even on the GTI or have to pay about $1k depending on how saucy the dealer is" And obvs put prolly another $10k for a down pmt. "Car only" The cost of ownership and insurance for either scenario is actually pretty darn close. Already checked around. I know id be happy with either decision, i feel like i'm missing something that i can factor in to make it easier to decide. And being here without any vehicle in front of me makes it easy to contradict any plan i have. One day its this the next day its that for what would be best. Anyways end rant just wanted to see what some of you guys thought about it. Appreciate it Last edited by 8mile; 02-26-2013 at 07:58 AM.. Reason: Pictures |

I'm really surprised that an HP4 costs 24,000! that's amazing. the thing about the M3 bug is that the only thing that scratches the itch is an M3. and if you have never had a car/bike combo, you won't know what you're missing.
buy an M3. you will be telling your kids about it |

I had both granted my S1000RR was a 2012. The S1000RR is a monster of a bike and if you really enjoy riding then i suggest getting the bike. I sold my bike because of the connecting rod recall that the 2012's had.
I kinda did the same thing you are thinking about and sold my e92 M3 and bought a new car with the intentions of not getting a bike this year but now that spring is getting closer iam starting to get the itch to ride. How long are your riding seasons in Detroit? How many miles do you ride a bike in a year? |

I've test riden the bike twice now. I'm moving up from an 07 600rr (sold) In mich you can ride from april till about early nov depending if it snows or not. I'll normally ride regardless of the weather.
Test drove a 2011 M3 Alpine white 6 spd last spring and obviously as you all know the feeling, it was more exhilarating then any car i had driven. So in the end i think thats what ill have to do is wait till i get home. I know i cant test ride the bike, its either a sale or fail. Test ride another s1k. Just a sticky situation i cant make my mind up about. Last edited by 8mile; 02-26-2013 at 10:22 AM.. Reason: pictures |

Thats what i've been thinking, the M3 will have the power-speed-and exclusiveness-sound and the all year round drive capability.

I would get the M3 but I'm not into motorcycles. I think you will find that most responses on this forum will lead you towards the M3. If you ask the same question on the motorcycle forum it would be the opposite... If you want some reasons I would tell you the M3 is much safer and you will get much more use out of it in Detroit (weather will limit riding).

I currently have two motorcycles, #14 and #15 in almost four decades of having two-wheelers, with probably 300,000 miles of riding.
Prior to taking delivery on the M3 convertible, these two bikes had about 35,000 miles on each. After taking delivery on the M3 convertible, these two bikes have about 35,001 miles on each. The convertible gives you the fun of air-riding and being in the open -- when you want; and, alternately, the OMG-it's-7-degrees-F-in-Michigan-but-I-got-a-top-with-a-heater-FTW when you want. Get the car, and then if you decide you want a bike, go get something cheaper and fun -- you won't ride it much. - V .

and 17,000 miles on this bought the M3 8 months ago and have barely put 100 miles on the GSXR1000 and 0 miles on the TLS, I live in LA so weather has nothing to do with only driving the M and not the bikes. If i were you, i'd buy a plain ol' S1000rr and the M3. HP4s are for collectors and track junkies, you'll never come close to reaching the limit on the street with that much bike.

M3 FTMFW!!
I too have always wanted an M3. I purchased a 335Xi with M-Sport in 6speed thinking it would "scratch my M3 itch" but it didnt. I modded the crap out of it only to dump it on swap a lease and ordered a fully loaded 2013 M3. The M3 is absolutely amazing! Such a different aninal than anything i have ever driven. I would strongly suggest you get the M3. GTI is boring and bikes are cool but a bit dangerous. M3 all the way. You will not regret it.

OP, the HP4 is the very best sportbike money can buy right now, but I'm sure you know this. I've been riding since 13 years old and did 2 years in the Italian SBK series on a Ducati before I attended college. First hand experience is that the M3 will not satisfy your speed addiction the way the HP4 will, it's not even the same planet, BUT that thing is a nuclear bomb when you mix street riding and stupid drivers around you. Get the bike and stick to the track. Your odds of surviving serious injury or worse is against you on the street.
You'll be so happy with the M3's performance, plus you can take so much more advantage of the M3 then you can the bike, road trips, dates w/ your GF... +1 for the M3

Wouldn't even be a choice for me...
Get the M3 and then get the bike when you can (or) buy a more affordable bike when you can. During the summer I put more miles on the harley than the M but if I had to choose one it would be my M3 all day long!

personal choice: M3 hands down (I've never ridden bikes before)
But you gotta have guessed everyone's answer on an M3 board irght? We'll all say get the M3. In fact, the people on the board resoundingly say "no" is in a situation where the person is obviously stretching finanically to aquire and maintain the car. Which doesn't appear to be your situation. |
