Akrapovic Slip On, Where's the sound?

With the stock exhaust, I could hardly hear it in the cabin.

Put on the Akrapovic Slip On and while it sounds nice outside, it's still pretty quiet in the cabin. I also expected it to get significantly louder past 4K, but it seems pretty constant. It seems that my other aftermarket exhausts (RSC on Aston, Europipe on Turbo, Porsche Sports Exhaust on Carrera) were much louder in the cabin.

Is the soundproofing that dense in the M3? Well I notice a big upgrade in sound if I go for the full Evolution?

Maybe I'm just forgetting how loud the other cars were. I've been driving my F430 a lot and it just screams past 4K. That car has stock exhaust, but Fabspeed headers/cats.

Yeah, the Akra is not really much louder than stock. the full kit with pipe will give a bit more sound, but it's mostly on the lower rpms...it will still be fairly quite on the high rpms.
if you're looking for more noise, you'll want to look at "sport" and "race" exhausts.

You'd be surprised how loud the car is outside. Inside, yes, the sound deadening is surprisingly effective.

That said, the S65 makes enough noise that it drowns out most reasonable slip ons over 4000 rpm. The intake is quite loud, so you hear that.

The Evolution is louder, but at the expense of a LOT more noise in the low end. It's probably the least drone prone full system, but it can still be surprisingly loud at low RPMs.

If you want loud from the outside at high RPMs, get a valved exhaust or get a super ear piercingly loud exhaust.

Sounds like you want race exhaust sound. Who doesn't?

Based on videos only the Akra slip on combined with Dinan x-pipe sounds pretty darn good. Or just get an Eisenmann Race.

With only a slip-on you don't get much extra sound. With the double cats and resonators still in place, it holds back most of the sound... I'm driving a full OEM exhaust but without the first cats, sounds good and not too loud. Also it brings a bit more HP.

If you researched before you would know the Akrapovic is one of the quietest exhausts.

Check out Eisenmann race or Meisterschaft for loud.

Akrapovic exhaust is probably one of the quietest exhausts out there for this car. Putting an xpipe on will make it a little louder, but it wont change the sound characteristic of the muffler (very hallow sounding and tin-like). I would go with Eisenmann, Meisterschaft, or Gintani if you're looking for loud exhausts that scream.

My previous set-up Eisenmann Race / Dinan x-pipe was killer, but I had to pop it into neutral the second I saw a cop.

This is the set up i think i am going to get. I hear that akra evo full system has no drone at all. I hate drone.
What about dinan x-pipe with akra slip on? Does it drone at highway speed?

I found the Akra slip on too bassy and quiet. I added the Akra x-pipe and it now sounds less bassy, louder and a little raspy in higher RPM's. Although, it's still quieter than most exhaust, it sounds great with the windows down.

Our M3s have very little sound proofing, especially in the trunk. The plastic tray for the air compressor & fix-a-flat is all that separates the trunk from the exhaust. The Akra slip-on is quiet compared to most of the other exhaust available, If you want it loud you should try a Gintani Race.

Akra/Dinan no drone sounds good to me. I see you leave in new york. Where exactly?
It would be great to get a ride in your car and hear that set up in real life.
Maybe we can meet up one day if you dont mind. I live in great neck NY

Thanks for the replies guys.

I was avoiding the race exhausts, because I can't stop the mod process then! Change the cats, then the headers, then the tune- the wife will kill me

I think I'll leave it as is for now and ride it out during the summer.

The soundproofing in these cars is very good, so the exhaust will sound much louder outside. It's night and day in my E93 with the top down and my oem mod. With that said, in my past experience, to get a really aggressive sounding exhaust, you need to lose the cats. Once you do that, you will probably be glad for the quiet rear section which should hopefully tone down the rasp. Good luck, modding is addicting for sure, it never ends...

If your patient you'll see used ones around $1100. Beware, unlike the Akra x-pipe the Dinan is full catless so pretty stinky.

Another option is eisenmann race, awesome sound and quality and you don't have to mess with the rest of the exhaust system.

how does the OEM exhaust mod compare to akra and other slip-on systems (in terms of sound)?

Can't compare to OEM mod, but compared to OEM, the tone is definitely lower and it has a real nice bassy sound. Outside the car, it does sound really nice.

I honestly could barely hear the exhaust on OEM while driving. With the Akra, it's definitely louder and you can hear the blips on heel/toe much better. However as I stated, it's still pretty muted in the cabin. Sounds similar to stock 911.

I took the wife for a drive and she didn't even notice I put on a new exhaust! The first time I took her for a drive in the Ferrari, she looked over and said, "You know, this noise level is highly illegal."

Ideally, I was looking for something in between an Akrapovic and a Ferrari. Loud, but not crazy loud. Oh well, changing the exhaust is not an option at this point given the money for parts/labor, so I think I'll just see how it goes over the next 6 months. If I'm still wanting more sound, I think I'll go full Evolution and tune.
