BMW has been furiously releasing special editions recently, including the Frozen M3 Edition for S. Africa, 120i Performance Unlimited Edition for Japan, and E90 Dynamic Edition for S. Africa.

Bimmertoday is now reporting that BMW has plans to release a Limited M3 Tiger Edition to the Chinese market, to commemorate the current Year of the Tiger. Appropriately, the M3 Tiger Edition will feature the M3 GTS' fire orange metallic paint with black accented elements. Blacked out parts will include its style 359M 19" wheels, hood air inlets, kidney grills, and black chrome exhaust tips.

The interior will feature black leather Novilla with contrasting orange stitching. The front seat headrests will be embroidered with a unique tiger head emblem. And the door sill plates will bear a Tiger Edition Logo in fire orange metallic color. An estimated 250 copies will be produced. No details yet on any performance enhancements or photos, but stay tuned.

One thing is for sure, this will be a catchy and unmistakable M3!

As someone who does business in China and know the market, this isn't a joke or a surprise. As SCOTT26 mentioned, the high-end market is in China these days, and all luxury makers - would it be fashion or cars, wants to make money and the people with lots of money is in China.

Also with the local taxes, cars in China is 3x the cost of what we would pay in the US, and with the local market very much into cash money buys (meaning they put full money down for goods - don't really do financing or leasing), BMW would have been stupid not to do something like this.

To tell you the truth, I would love to buy one of these tiger cars. I'll look for one next time I head out to China.

BMW is quite smart, they really did their homework well...people here might think its hokey or stupid but in fact the consumer in China will love a product like this because due to the fact it "celebrates" year of the tiger and it is "special". But all in all it is all a marketing scheme to sell more units at a inflated price.

I saw it working it's way down the line during my tour of the Regensburg factory last month. When I asked if it was a GTS the guide said: "No, it's a Tiger Edition..."

Unfortunately no cameras are allowed inside the factory, but just imagine a GTS w/o the wing and splitter and you get the idea.

The problem is, in the Chinese zodiac, EVERY YEAR is assigned an animal - next year the hare and the dragon the year after and so on - so does this mean they will have a special edition every year?

IMHO, it's a bit silly of them. I know there's money to be made in China but these endless monthly release of special 'editions' are getting a bit annoying.

Actually its the year of the "white" tiger this year, and the Chinese deem it very very special due to it coming around every 60 years. So thats probably why BMW labeled it the 'tiger' special edition (I guess if they called it the 'white tiger' special edition, it would have came in AW).

Don't know why the 'white' tiger year in the Chinese zodiac is so special, but my kid was born this year and everyone mentioned it to me like it was a special thing. Go figure.
