Drifting event/class (SoCal)

This is sort of a feeler to gauge any possible interest on SoCal people who might be interested in attending a drifting class/event. It'll be with instructors and on a track, and have classes for beginners and intermediates. Intermediate is instructed by an active Formula D driver. I'm going to attend, and, of course, am angling for a Group Buy rate.

If interested, do you prefer weekends or is a week day ok? (less expensive on a week day) With enough interest/participation, I think we can do a weekend gig. And, would you use your own car, or pay more and use their prep'd cars?

There might be one on a weekday in mid-December at Willow Springs... but, other dates and locations are possible too.

Plz PM me if interested.

You should really post a range of prices to gauge interest.

10-4. I don't speak for this organizer, so I sort of hesitated in doing that, but here's what I know from speaking to them recently:

Non-group rate is $700 for full day for beginner class & $900 for full day for intermediate class ($400 & $500, respectively, if you bring your own car). I took the beginner one using their car a year ago and I had a blast and IMO was worth the money. But YMMV, of course, and that's why I'm looking to bring down those rates w/ a group buy.

It's the guys who are known for 'Drift Day 101/102' and 102 is taught by Taka Aono, who currently competes in Formula D.

Anybody else? With as much power as our M3's have, if it's one thing I got out of this class (other than the obvious fun-factor), it's that you become fairly comfortable with the steering wheel when the back-end comes out w/ the DSC turned off.

It'll be at one of the tracks in LA area. And, from feedbacks I've gotten so far, everybody prefers the weekend. More info forthcoming...

Stripped down 240SX's (typical JDM drift cars), w/ racing seats & harness. Engine's very lively.

In the beginner class, you wind up thrashing around a lot (donuts, clockwise & counter-clockwise, and then figure-8's around 2 cones), so you really don't want to use your own car. When I took it a year ago, I wound up blowing a rear tire being so heavy-footed. Thank g00dness it was their car (rear OE Michelin's on M3 costs $980 for a pair!). But, I think Yokohama's costs only half that of Michelin's.

So far, the general consensus is, ya'll want it on a weekend, and sometime in mid-January, and most want to use their cars.

Very interested, Agree that I would not buy tires for this even just to kill them, even though I would love to drive my own car.

Once you give a date and more accurate pricing Ill see if I can get some others to come as well.

Would it be possible for beginners to use the schools cars for main lessons and have a short "in your own car" session at the end of the day? I'd like to be able to practice at least a little bit in my own car.

re: driving our own cars, yeah it's too bad because E9x M3's are great drift cars even in stock form. Clutch-kick is the best initiation technique w/ our cars. JDM's seems to use a lot of e-brake and clutch-kick combo.

It's www.driftday.com, but the reason why I didn't post them earlier is (you'll see) they haven't updated since I last took the course (Dec 2009). They're apparently busy w/ the Formula D season, and Drift Day 101/102 courses & corporate events thrown in-between and they apparently don't even have time to update web-sites anymore, but they don't need to I guess as they're still getting business. Interestingly, they also do Grip Day (i.e. regular track thing). As the organizer puts it, they fully recognize that drifting, or sliding around bends, is only a part of the overall driving & track experience and, hence, are involved in Grip Day's too.

Of course. They fully welcome people trying out their own cars on the track. When I blew out a tire on their car last year, they asked if I want to try my M3 and I declined (Michelins too expensive). LOL Anyhow, some people show up w/ their 370Z, RX-8, etc, and go wild. I think those people go to their local tire shops and beg for 1/2 used tires and show up in those & let loose.

Any new pricing info, or date/time? Looks like you would have at least 10 people.
