For those thinking about waiting for MY 2009...

Looks like new features will be added to nav and iDrive. Check the link below. It doesn't sound like there will be a retrofit to the 2008 models.

Here's a second link:

Great information....thanks. Yep, I'm waiting for 2009 MY. I want at least 10+ months of a model year before the car takes a $10K depreciation hit.

The M models aren't mentioned in the article. I wonder if this is because they are meant to be implied by the inclusion of their non-M platform mates, or if they really will be left out for '09?

An interesting and possibly cool new feature, but... I don't think that would cause me to postpone my order. I'm looking at July or so (dct sedan). Now, if they make some significant look changes that are hot... perhaps. I'm not that worried about depreciation as I buy my cars to drive, and I tend to keep them a good while. Now... if the dealer comes back with a date in Aug, that might be enough to push over into 2009... but oh, that would hurt.

Looking back at the E46, the totally bad ass LED taillights were the only change during the entire M3 production run that I felt were significant enough to wait to order... and those ended up being available via an OEM retrofit kit. Don't wait, strike while the iron's hot!

google send is available in some euro territories so this is bmw USA playing catchup. By making it available on the x6 now allows them to get a few more column iches devoted to it in press. If the bmw assist TCU doesn't need to change, I would be surprised if we don't see this feature available on other MYs with a TIS upgrade.

Here's a link to an article by Jonathan Spira.

http://stage.bmwcca.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1114

According to the article, the Google features require a different telematics unit and cannot be retrofitted with a software upgrade.

Thanks for posting.

I had changed my MY 08 for Sept delivery for an MY 09 deliver in Oct. I was begin to second guess my descia as my lack of patience is begging to grow. I can;t believe i still have 6 months to wait.

I'm glad I'm waiting for the 09, this seems like a very useful feature since I am often on Google looking something up, printing it and them manually imputing in my cars nav. I'm sure there will be other things as well that will be new of 09

Already have this and to be fair, it's of limited use. I dont rely on Google for places I want to go, I plan my trips in advance as they are generally for business and so I know where I am going. I wouldnt wait months for my car for it, it aint all that. Clever yes, useful, a bit.

Yes, the Euro cars already have this. The USA M3s currently dont.

That said, I was flicking through my owners guide. It has a picture of the BMW Assist services available on page 208. MY INFO is listed as one of the services.

This manual is for a March production M-DCT car.

So that led me to believe that possibly they will role this out for March 08 production cars .... Who knows. I'm skeptical though, because the need to change the TCU in the car. Perhaps these newer TCUs will work both with the old and new network .. who knows??

Can you scan that page. I find it hard to believe that no-one had been able to locate the electronic version of the DCT manual.

Would this "upgrade" only be available if you buy the "enhanced" Assist plan? Or would it come with the car if you just had the Tech package (Nav)?

Likey, these updates will simply start and will not be associated with a model year change.

I am almost sure I will wait for a 2009 DKG Sedan now... not that the updates are earth-shattering, but I don't want a "dated" car in any way if I am paying MSRP or close to.

I am going to pursue Euro Delivery in the Fall. That should give me something to do while I wait -- like plan a trip!

From what I have read this is not an 'update' it requires a telematics unit in the car capable of receiving and processing directives by GSM SMS. Current BMW models in the US are equipped with CDMA telematics modules and thus cannot utilize this service.
