I rode behind the new M3 in the Canyons today!

Wow is all i can say, it was stripped but had the mirrors and quads and side vents but no markings of m3. and then you hear that v-8 growl it was the best sounding factory v8 ive ever heard. this thing handled the twisties amaingly. so i kept following this german engineer until he pulled over and said go in front so i asked him some questions. he said the only negative drawback during his testings he found the rear axle is too long and they will shorten it other than that he would not confirm the price but i did ask if it was 53k he said almost a NO but when i asked around 70-80k he said around there. I will not buy this car but it definately will give you great lap times and bring a lot of fun. I had my windows down and the m3 never broke loose at a good pace so this car really has performance over the rs4 from what i witnessed.

70-80k USD, wow isn't that a big departure from E46 M3's price?

Not if they are shooting for RS4 territory. E46M3 is to the S4 as the E90M3 should be to the RS4.

I dont care what anyone says the M3 WILL NOT cost 70-80K. 70K only puts it a couple options below a M5 and 80k has it just 6k shy of the M5, which is wayyyy to close in the pricing segment.

I mean a fully loaded E92 335i convertible costs about 50K. They then would have a 20K void before the starting price of the M3 leaving a very large price window. I would believe the M3 will start at a price around 55-60K, making it roughly 10K more than the E46 M3.

I don't think so. I don't think it will hit 80K personally, but stay near the 70K mark nicely if not fully equipped(not counting dealer mark ups and such).

Keep in mind that a loaded 335i will hit the 50K mark already...so it has to be kind of proportional here.

The E46 M3 with no option starts at 48K, and can add another 10K easily with some options and TTL.

Why would they feel the need to shoot for RS4 pricing when the M3 will be above it. What they should want to do is make a car better and price it lower. I have NEVER seen a RS4 on the road and at that price I won't see many M3's either which is not what BMW wants. That price territory will shy buyers away not bring them in.

I pretty much agree with you here. My opinion is that the 70K will be for everything.

Going off your 55-60k starting price, you add some options, TTL, gas guzzler tax and I think the whole total will be close to 70K. There is no way the base price is 70K in my eyes though, just way too expensive, even for an M3.

Havent seen too many people shy away from a 3 series that didnt have an M in the name so far(335) but plunk down 45+ large for it. Considering the 3 series used to be "nicely" equipped under 39.

I think BMW has found a winning formula with the 335i (insert fuel pump joke here). People like myself, who has always loved the M's and AMG's can not afford one at the current time. However I was able to afford the 335i and that car has enough power to convince me to like it. I've never considered any other 3 series under an M because they all lack power for me.

The only people clearing 45K are the ones that have to have everything on their car or needed the convertible. A "nicely" equipped 3er can be had for sub 45K and it's been proven. Just because a couple thousand people are willing to shell out 50K for the car doesn't mean they want to make the jump to a starting 70K price tag.

I think the 1-series will try to fill the gap on the lower end $30-40k from the reports I keep reading.

They also had to begin to raise the price of the 3er ever so slightly to allow for a pricing segment of the upcoming 1er. Keeping the starting price of the 3er at 29k would have shoved the starting price for the 1er into the low 20K area. And you know BMW wanted no business going below 25K for any of their cars in the USA.

They tried that before with the 325Ti. We saw how that turned out. Im not opposed to it, but how many people are going to buy a 1 series for that much when they can get a GTI, A3, or even Mazdaspeed3 for half?

Thats about right just a tad lower. Most magazines I've picked up say the 135i close to loaded will be had for 35k, placing it at the starting price of the 328xi. Just like the highest end, non-M 3er ends right at the 5er's starting price and so on. BMW will essentially be filling every price category from 25K up to $140K. Unless they leave a 20K gap between the E92 335ci and the M3.

You'll see the same movement from people that are jumping ship from their Evo's, STI's, Mazdaspeed6's.

You'll have people being like, "hmm my GTI/MS3 is just 8k shy of the 135i, maybe I should check that out since it's a lot nicer car." The people that enjoy cars dont want the 16k GTI, they want the 26K one. Also the people that like the Imprezza would rather have the 27k WRX, and the WRX people would rather have the 34K STI, and the STI people want the 39K 335i.

BTW the A3 moves right into the mid to high 30's real easy, sure you can get the low end one for 25k but they are working that market just fine.
