Whirring noise under engine braking - Please chime in
I've tried searching the forums and I cannot find anything exactly like what I am experiencing. The noise I'm trying to describe is only noticeable with a closed throttle and is louder at high speeds. (Think, coming off the highway on an offramp). It is a low pitch noise that drops in tone as you slow down. It could be something in the wheel well, like an unbalanced tire, or possibly something in the engine bay. The thing throwing me off is that there is no effect on ride quality and no shaking in the steering wheel, so that is why I am lead to believe that it isn't a tire issue.
Anyone out there have any experience with this, or can possibly chime in on factors that may be attributing to this whirring? - Only previous incident I have had with the car was running over part of a shredded tire on the highway. It went under the center of the car. Thanks! Last edited by RoundTwo; 07-31-2012 at 07:52 PM.. |

Difficult with the info provided, at least for me. Can the sound by captured in a video?

Possibly, may still not be audible enough to capture in the cockpit. The only thing I'm coming up with outside of this forum is a wheel bearing issue. Is that possible?

It's happening in most gears when coasting, so yeah I would imagine 2-3k RPM range.
I question that it's my diff, because I never noticed this sound before. It's bothering me because it's like the engine braking doesn't sound smooth. It has this whir. I have Hankook Ventus 285re and 265fr, and that could be the issue. I had my new wheels put on in April and really hadn't noticed it before that. The car is going to IND in a few days, so if they can't figure it out there, I'll be headed to the dealer once the car gets back. Keep the thoughts comin guys. I had a similar noise which I thought was my diff. Ended up being a wheel bearing on my rear passenger side. Fixed at dealer under warranty and no noise since.
