E39 M5 vs. E92 M3 - Something Isnt Right. . .

For some reason this video doesn't seem like its telling the whole story. . .Is the E39 M5 really as quick as the new generation M3. I dont know whether the M5 is modded out in any way. . .definately want your input. . .Im confused.

BINGO. . .

M5 mods are Magnaflow Cans, Dinan Intakes and Dinan S1 Tune pushing around 120k on the ol' ticker. M3 is completely stock just over 3k on the readout.

I was coming back from LA on the 15 recently and ran into an E39 M5 with a carload of people. It was just myself in the E92 M3. He gave me a pretty good run and even pulled on me at times. I am thinking that the car was modified.

it has liter more of displacement, 400hp and puts down 75ft.lb of torque more than M3. even though it is heavy, by 40mph car gathered quite bit of inertia and torque is certainly going to help out at that mid range speed.

It's close but the M3 is faster.

I raced a E39 M5 with my E46 M3 from a dig..... Had him the whole way.... We then did a 40mph roll and I stuck with him until about 100 and he slowly walked away... There is NO WAY IN HELL that a stock E39 M5 is competing with the new M3

E39 M5 is a fantastic BMW...one I would like to own one day. The roll on start from 40mph resulted in an what appears to be an even fight. I am curious to see what a standing start would yield....

I hate to be that guy, but someone has to ask.
Is that M5 stock, or is it modded?

What makes you think so? Is it because it says so right in the video?

Inertia is that stuff that keeps you from accelerating. A car has no more inertial mass (or inertia) at 40 mph than 0 mph.

I was expecting the E92 to win.

I with some friends and one has a Dinan E46 M3, intake, flash, exhaust vs. a stock 01 M5 and they where pretty much even to around to 90-100mph where the M5 started pulling slightly.

True, and although mathematically flawed, in common language it is often said that object gathered inertia to describe the fact that it does not any more force applied to move freely (so-to-speak)

quoting almighty wikipedia here...

This meaning of a body's inertia therefore is altered from the original meaning as "a tendency to maintain momentum" to a description of the measure of how difficult it is to change the momentum of a body.

I raced a e39 M3 vs. my e46 M3 around the Las Vegas road course. we both were stock with R-tires and brake pads. he was a CCA instructor and he finally had to point me by and after a couple laps a pulled out of sight.

and th e92 is even faster. wtf.

I ran a friend with an e39 m5 a couple of weeks ago from somewhere like 40mph and I had him twice, I was pulling away in every gear... and I had something 2400km on the clock...

Raced my friend's e39 m5 last weekend. he has a dinan chip & full dinan exhaust & a the stage II dinan suspension. He had a full tank of gas. I had about 1/2 tank and a 155lb passenger.

We were dead even any way we cut it. Did rolls ranging from 30mph to 170mph. (on a safe, closed airstrip)

Edit: Also, I hit 170 on the speedo 3 times. Is it really off by that much?
