95 octane fuel
howzit dudes
i live up in johannesburg (about 1600mtr above sea level). i know the manual says that bmw reccomends 98+ octane fuel for best performance, but the highest octane fuel we get is 95. does filling some octane booster in the tank make any difference on the reef? when i drive my car down to the coast its like driving a totally different machine. i think im loosing about 20% power here on the reef! any advise? |

I work for Shell so I am biased. I use V-Power. Pretty much all gasoline is formulated the same, as required by EPA. However, the main differences come in the additives - mainly detergents to keep engine clean. My understanding is that Shell and Chevron have the best additives.

For the last few years I've gone out of my way to find a Shell station so I could use V-power 93. I've been pretty successful in using it almost exclusively in my 545i in the past, my M5 most recently, and hopefully in my soon-to-arrive M3. There were articles in the mags and on the forums a couple of years ago about the importance of using a Top Tier certified gasoline on high-performance engines like ours. Especially since recent BMWs seem to have very finicky fuel pumps. The list of Top Tier gas stations is kind of surprising--many of the big names are excluded, but smaller/random companies like QuikTrip are on the list. Shell is one of the few big names listed. My family thinks I'm nuts to drive a few miles out of the way for a Shell station (and in the process probably burn a gallon or two in the M5--avg daily mpg for me 7.5), but it gives me peace of mind.

I understand tha that the ratings shown on US pumps are an average calculated differently from that shown on our UK pumps difference is 4 to 5 so US 91 on pump will equate to our std 95. Many UK outlets offer 98 or 99 "super" or "ultra" graded guel and a few 100 or 101

Octane rating depend upon the country
There is a RON rating , a MON rating, and in the US we use an average (R+m)/2 rating European 91 equals US 87 95 equals US 91 98 equals US 93 so the OP is using US 91 and asking about using US 93 instead.

100 octane can be found in Colorado and California, and it's all over the place in Vegas. Not too far from where I live I can get 93, which itself is an improvement over 91, which seems to leave the car a bit anemic by comparison. No objective benchmarks, though, just going by feel and sound. And the way the car jumped at sea level when punching it. Wow!

Hey there
Fellow SA member here. 95 is fine, 98 would be better so throw in a bottle of octane booster once in a while. I recommend either NF ultra or Torco. Pm me if you want more info |
