I'm pretty sure what you are describing is the responsiveness of the tire. Yes, the sidewall in an R-Comp is less pliable and can't generate as much slip angle as a street tire which explains the more sudden breakaway characteristics vs a street tire.

Let's say an R-Comps starts to slide at 20% slip...a street tire might still slip and not slide but an R-Comp will generate more grip in a higher range of slip angle vs a street tire which will have peak grip starting at less slip angle. My backside tells me this. But this all depends on the tire too. So I think generalizations are helpful but never tell the whole truth. Because some r-comps react differently and street tires have vastly improved.

So fist fight at TWS? Bring it!

Tread splice?

With occasional, subtle suggestions and redirects, I will eventually have this thread discussing why the Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire.

Thread post count 5000, here we come!

Yes...the Schroth quick fit thread part two. For the record, I tried to keep this on topic. I 110% blame Thundermoose. I'll slap him the next time I see him.

trying to get this thread back on track, tomorrow I'm heading to the track with my fairly fresh NT01s ... one of them has a thin horizontal line (not really a splice) but i'm hoping it'll go away with wear. I'll report back if I see any issues.

In other news, I snagged a set of barely used BFG R1 really cheap which I'm looking forward to trying after my NT01 are worn out..

Here's what info I have. Not sure about the factual content.

I saw someone post some tire rack info on splicing in Toyo tires and how to deal with it. Apparently, Toyo owns Nitto. According to the person I've talked to, he first noticed the splicing issue with the Toyo RRs. Then he started seeing it in the NT01s. He's confident that the production of the RRs and NT01s are linked and feels that this is a quality control issue...as some have said before. Nitto has not come out and said anything but they aren't telling everyone to go pound sand either. This kind of sounds like the BMW E46 subframe issue...no warranty unless you kick a little butt.

Break

I called Steve at Nitto, I'm submitting 3 tires to discount tires for a potential warranty replacement. I will report back on how it goes. Won't be quick, have to get a buddy to do the warranty exchange since the tires are in TX and I'm in WI.

Here are the steps I took...

1. Email Nitto @ nittotech@nittotire.com the pictures, details on the car, and what happened.
2. Call Nitto Tire @ 714-252-0007 and ask for the Tech Dept.
3. CALMLY explain the situation over the phone, ask for a case #.
4. Wait a couple of days, call back. They told me to proceed and get the tires looked at.

***This is where I am at***

5. Take the tires to an authorized Nitto dealer (i.e. discount tires)
6. Tell discount to call Nitto (Steve in the Tech Dept (714-763-4009)) to finalize the warranty claim.
7. Apparently, you'll get a new tire. Not sure if it will be 100% covered or pro rated.

Feel free to update if anyone who has gone through the whole process.

I'll run them until the splice starts opening up. IIRC, I replaced 2 in Jan because of the splice opening up. Then 2 more with open splices in Mar. Then I just wore down the 2 I bought in Jan, one spliced.

I only have 3 of the 5 tires spliced tires in my possession. Back in Jan I called Performance Tread but said I was SOL...I tossed them.

Do you mean my original post that started this thread? Have we really gone that far since the thread started?

Here's the Tire Rack tech info on tread splices:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...jsp?techid=160

And the Toyo bulletin for the RR:

Seems like Nitto is taking care of it. I haven't taken my tires to Discount yet.

But...my current set of 18s, 2 are pretty new, 2 are close to cording, have no splicing. I should kill the rears at COTA next weekend. I'll report back.

Really hoping they fixed this because I just bought another set of NT01s in 17s.

Yeah I hope so as well. Don't really want to switch tires.

I know, the NT01s are a great bargain. I just went to 275/40R17 NT01s...a set shipped is $860! No other R-Comp tire is within $100 for a set.
