E46 v e9x m3
Why is the e46 lightly modded just so so so sooooo much more fun to drive?!?!? It is so much more pure and raw of an enthusiast experience! When they are taken care of properly they ar more of a head turner than the e9x too. I know this is a forum of users obsessed with the buttons on the e9x and I love the e9x for it's motor and advanced technology. But for fun it just isn't close to a good e46 m3. Does anyone else feel this way? This goes for the e39 as well. However the new f10 m5 is pretty cool... M3 is just supposed to be the less luxurious fun car and the m5 is supposed to be the badassss executive saloon with cool technology but can beat anything out there. I'd like to see the line between the m3 and m5 less blured aka m3 lighter less buttons more of a pure everyday driver and racer. The m5 is good where it's at the m3 needs to distance itself from the m5.

Head turner... subjective... E46 is very nice looking but looks dated and no where near as nice as the E92. Obsessed with buttons... didn't know we were all like that. Thanks for enlightening us on that point.

After reading your post I couldn't even look at my 2011 E92. I drove it and didn't hear the S65 nor the exhaust at 8400RPM. I drifted a 90• corner at high speed but nothing seems to satisfy my "button obsessed" mind. I flicked through my 7 gears with that DCT thing, first 3 gears WOT and even that continuous pulling didn't do it for me. I'm selling it for a "lightly modded" E46. Thanks

In my family, there is 6 boys. 4 of us have M3's currently. #5 is on the way
2 98 E36's 5 speeds. Not mine, but those things were epic at the time. I was just a youngin back than, and to me that thing was like a super car with the vaders. The obsession started. 4 E46 M3's, 3 6mts 02, 02, 05, and now currently a comp package 05 smg belongs to one of the other brothers. Special special car. One of my all time favorites. Classic design, has aged so well and and just a sexy car. That thing was an absolute blast and I feel like I've been around that car forever. never owned one, but know all about it and and what its about. Since December 2001 till now. 3 E9x M3's currently belong to me and 2 of the others. You have to realize BMW is not stupid. They know what their doing. I'm just in denial that this is the last "real M3" but I'm sure the next gen will out do it. However I am content with that. I have a E90 DCT with all the nuts and bolts... and I really don't think it could get better in terms of how it performs in pretty much stock form now. The DCT is on another level. Even my brothers with 13 plus years of driving M3's with manuals say this tranny is special. The sound of the V8 is epic, absolutely epic. The ONE BIG COMPLAINT i have with this current gen M3 is the layout of the inside. The cupholders are an Epic fail, I feel like the e46 layout was much much better, and the seats of the E46 are much more "fatty" friendly. oki So in a nut shell I see where your coming from, but the E9x is far superior in every aspect. Not saying the E46 is a slouch because it certainly is not, their just two very different cars, with the same heritage. And the next generation will more than likely blow all of these previous ones out of the water. Thats just how the cookie cumbles |

OP comes off a bit trollish. You can say the same thing about each generation M3. The E46 is less raw and less of an enthusiast car than the E36. And the E36 is less raw than the E30. But each successor was arguably better than the previous. And lets not start comparing modded vs stock again.

My Model T was more "involving" than my E9x and way more simplistic... Hate all these faster/safer cars

coming from an e46, my e92 is so much more car. I don't miss the barbaric SMG that's for sure. My e92 is so much more refined/improved upon in all aspects which definitely puts a bigger grin on my face.

Go ahead and call anyone who isn't an e9x M3 driver a troll. That's a fanboy's prerogative. But the OP speaks the truth.
You all just keep on reading magazines and quoting specs. I owned an e46 M3 and am on my second e90 M3. No doubt the e9x M3s are better cars than the e46 M3s. However, they are bland and nowhere near as engaging as the e46 was. After both are obsolete (not too far into the future, BTW) it will be the damned fun e46 that collectors will want not the generic e9x.

It's called progressive refinement. More raw does not equal better. I can see how one can feel nostalgic about an e46 m3, but it is no comparison to an e9x series. An e92 is many times over more refined, uses better materials inside and out, is faster in a straight line, on a track, brakes better, is a better DD, looks more aggressive yet sophisticated, is more reliable and by BMWs own admission, the best m3 they have ever developed. The engine alone is a crown jewel of BMW engineering. -SZ |

OP was just trying a start discussion on whether E46 is more fun to drive than E9x.
I think he was just stating his opinion regarding the cars. We never know if he drove both cars or not. Neither we know that each of you who said E9x is better have driven E46 or not. He even mentioned E39, which is true. E39 is the game changer in my book. Chillax, fellas. If you call this "troll", how about those little girls who create douche bag threads? If you disagree with this thread, maybe you guys should think whether the topic you're about to discuss should belong to Twitter or this forum. O yeah, rants belong to Twitter, not forum.

If I went on a Ferrari forum and said "Hi guys... I know that all of you buy Ferrari's because money is no object and you like the image but I think the M3 is a better value because..." I think I would get a similar response. Last edited by gthal; 07-10-2011 at 05:04 AM.. |

You said it perfectly
I too fell in love threw an e36 and I was young at the time as well. My e46 was in the shop for a few weeks and just getting it back was like falling in love all over. The v8 and the dct of the e9x is no doubt the best attribute of the model. I did actually notice how well the e46 seemed to be layer out the other day funny you said that! The only point I was trying to get across really was that the m3 and m5 should distance themselves from each other a little. I can appreciate every M model for it's strong points. Constructive criticism was my intention. Obviousy the e9x is epic in it's own. But I feel the e46 does it in a more exciting way for me

Did I say better.....nope I said more fun yup. You act like the e9x is significantly faster but it's not. Dct is fast the s65 is awesome end of story
P.s. Again with the refinement..... QUOTE=SUB-ZERO;9990686]A Ferari 355 is much more raw than a 360 and a 360 is much more raw than a 458. The 458 is probably one of Ferraris best cars ever. Get the point? It's called progressive refinement. More raw does not equal better. I can see how one can feel nostalgic about an e46 m3, but it is no comparison to an e9x series.
