Blown motor mount?
I was under the M doing some maintenance and I noticed the rubber on the driver's side motor mount is torn. I haven't handled an e9x M3 motor mount personally so I'm trying to find out if this is just cosmetic damage or if I should be replacing them soon? Haven't noticed any noise to indicate the motor is moving excessively yet.

I'd replace it, but that's just me.

Destroyed. Definitely replace. Mine were pulled out around 52 and didn't look that bad, but there were signs of cracking. When the motor was removed, one of them ripped. I now have the vibra-technics mounts and highly recommend them.

The dirt build up around it is from the oil out of the mount sticking to it. It's done for, change them both.

I'd replace with the Vorshlag's. Beautiful piece, fits in stock location. Get more power to the ground!!!! Same labor costs.

You don't need anything more than stock mounts, but Vibra Technic, Vorshlag, AKG, Rogue, Bimmerworld and others sell stiffer mounts. Which are best is debatable. Stiffness is a compromise since NVH is compromised. I have run Bimmerworld and Vorshlag in my 99M3 and have a set of Rogue waiting for my 08M3. Look at your trans mounts while in there. Think of them as rear engine mounts.

Just replaced them with OEM. This is my DD, so I'd like to keep the ride smooth. I checked out the trans mounts too, but they were in fine shape. I'm not sure if it is confirmation bias, but it seems to go into first and second gear a lot smoother after replacing these.

Proper shifter geometry is maintained when the engine is not flexing all over the place so that observation is probably real. How long did that job take you?

Most of a day, but I did it as part of chasing down a rattle that turned out to be the exhaust contacting the metal bracket supporting the bottom part of the rear bumper. If you were doing just the motor mounts with basic garage tools (i.e. floor jack, not a lift) you could probably do it in 3-4 hours.
