I Love My M3!! So much fun on the track!
Folks - I've done two track days with my new m3 (with about 8 trackdays in total, previously in a gtr) and I must say I absolutely, absolutely love it!!!
My god, the way the engine screams up to 8500rpm.. Upshifting close to redline on the straights .. 3...short shift to 4... 5... 6.. and then hard on brakes into the first turn!! and then on a slightly wet track... a four wheel drift in a tight chicane.. Its an indescribable feeling!! MY GOD! I LOVE THIS CAR!!! AND For those who haven't taken their M3 out on the track yet... you are missing the very essence of this car... it is meant to be driven at the limit... engine screaming.. lap after lap... with no overheating... no issues... just go on.. and on... It is the most fun I've had ... ever!! .. ever!! w: |

Nicely done. Enjoy it!
What are your impressions of it on the track compared to the GTR?

another satisfied customer! I had the exact same reaction. Although I'm surprised you're as excited about being on the track coming from the GT-R, can you describe the differences - good and bad?

Glad you enjoy it, but a GT-R eats the M3 for lunch on track. I was quicker on all seasons in a 2009 GT-R with just flash and lowering springs than I am in my coilover equipped M3 on slicks. The M3 wins in steering feel and longevity (GT-R trans fluid overheats in a few hard laps). GT-R wins all other categories.

-- here's my comparison (pasted from another thread) Older GTRs tend to overheat their transmissions quickly (8-10 laps) and require tranny cooling upgrades, also the tranny has a history of blowing up when under stress (go see how many gtrs have tranny failures over on gtrlife.com) and I was constantly worrying about warranty. Also tires and pads are slightly more expensive, the stock rotors will crack after 2-3 trackdays so you need to upgrade those.. most importantly, the gtr has such high limits that as a low-med intermediate track driver like me, I could never find them.... with my m3, I can get closer to those limits thus making me a better driver (and have more fun IMO) However on the other hand, the gtr is a monster, a sledge hammer.. you will easily do lap times with a gtr that are just not possible with most other cars..the gtr will crush literally almost any other car on the track... but the funny thing is .. when you go fast in a GTR... everyone says "oh its the car"... when you go slow in a GTR... everyone says "man, you suck as a driver" ... when you go fast in a m3, atleast you can feel better knowing its your own driving skills at work.. Yeah the M3 is pretty capable out of the box. Throw on a set of decent pads and you're good to go. It's disappointing to hear you would spend 100k on a GTR then need make further upgrades to make it track ready. What a beast though!

Except for the brakes, the M3 is definitely a track worthy car stock.

oh and for those who say, why not get a cheap track car aka Miata ... well if I had the garage space I definitely would but I don't... I track the m3 and then the very same evening, wash it and take the wife out for a nice dinner and a movie... its the perfect balance between a nice dd that my wife enjoys and a track monster!! .. infact I always keep half my track stuff (toolbox, chair etc) in the trunk so I don't even pull it out.. if a track days comes up.. just throw a bunch of things in... and head out to the track... love it!! |

Cool review, definitely accurate. The M3 is easier to drive close to its limits (contrary to magazine editors assertions) because going through the esses at 120 is less scary than 130+ every time. The M3 is a way better street car. That GT-R trans, especially early models, sounds like a dump truck every shift. I prefer the GT-R on track because it is so much faster (I was 7 seconds faster at VIR), but the M3 is so much more rounded.
It is definitely annoying in both cars to have to spend $3k+ (trans cooler for GT-R; bbk for M3) when they're both $70k+ cars that are supposed to be track worthy. Sure you can get by with stock M3 brakes, but a fast driver will melt them if he/she doesn't take it easy every few laps, even with PFC's. |

the trick is not to. thats me in the first photo on the left. i run stock brakes, granted with pads, fluid, lines and ducts but braking harder for shorter period of time helps as its time not force that creates the heat mostly. later they are applied the more time they have had to cool since last application.
