Actually it would not make a world or difference, it would make a slight difference. I recently drove a Jag XKR-S on the road and on a track. The ZF auto in that car may not shift as fast as a DCT but it shifts pretty damn fast and is incredibly smooth. For what I would use the car for if Jag went to a DCT it would mean nothing to me.

I guess it comes down to personal preference. I think it would really help add to the driving experience.

Getrag makes a great DCT, they are used in cars like the 458 italia and SLS AMG.

My one and only gripe about dct is sometimes I have no clue what gear I'm in. Like approaching a quick right turn u slow down, ur watching the road and for pedestrians but also have to look down to see if dct downshifted for u to the proper gear or are u still in 6th. And have to change yourself

I believe your gear is shown in the middle of the gauge cluster. A heads up display would of been nice. We should see an M heads up display like the current gen M5 in the next M3.

In normal mode, PDK will upshift for max fuel economy, but it's completely different in sport or sport mode. OP, did the P-car you drove have sport chrono?

I didn't see the timer so I don't think the car was equipped with Sport Chrono Plus.

Your assessment of pdk sounds like you didn't have the setting right or didn't have sport chrono at all in the car.
It's funny that it took BMW 4 years of tweaking to get it right or close to right whereas most of the others have been nearly perfect from the day of their launch.
They are all relatively close overall, but it's little things that you prefer in one over the other. It comes down to personal preference.

After all...Porsche created this technology over 20 years ago so you can thank them for inventing it (along with many other things like synchro mesh).
Very close. Honestly, I think the tables would of turned if the Sport Chrono Pack was equipped.

The downshift "clunk" you noticed on the MCT tranny... was that all of the time or just sometimes. I ask because my experience with the MCT is that it downshifted and rev matched well. Not as fast as the DCT on up or downshifts (the DCT is just crazy fast and seamless) but quite capable. I didn't spend enough time with the MCT to really find if the downshift was a problem.

I would say it most of the time. The car can double de-clutch but it didn't feel that way.

Very interesting... I didn't notice this issue but it will bug me if it is a problem.

It was interesting to see Lexus go SMG in the LFA as it offered more "feel and involvement" than DCT options.

I do like DCT and also had an SMG-II car before this one. I do sometimes wish there was a bit more of a "kick in the butt" with DCT than there is currently but all-in-all it's a fine transmission.

great write up. I have driven all of these except the MB and would agree with you on your ranking. my pet peeve with PDK is the dumb shift buttons that it comes with standard. they are absolutely worthless. In typical Porsche fashion, they make you pay extra for something that should be standard like actual shift paddles. I still prefer manual cars for track toys, but the DCT is great for daily use and fun on the track as well.

Not sure by your post if this is what you were insinuating, but the BMW DCT was developed (mostly) by Getrag.

I also like how the DCT shift paddles move with the steering wheel, unlike the GT-R's and some others.

with paddles mounted onto the stearing column..its usually easier for tracking..that is the reason for the design...a turn at a high speed with the paddle on an odd side of the steering wheel can cause some difficulty..if its mounted to the coulumn its always in one place...i have a gtr and its so much easier mounted on the column then on my dct cars.....however it IS all about preference ;-)

Mercedes should can the planetary MCT box and just put the DCT from the SLS in all the AMG cars.
Unfortunately, the DCT in the SLS has a very tiny lag on up-shifts as well.

OP do you know if DCT on m cars has changed at all or just the software updates makes the transmission so much smoother than other car makers?

Great write up and comparison of the different boxes. I have to say I love my DCT, never ceases to amaze me at how good it really is
