Next Gen Corvette to steal M3 owners?

Did anyone see this rumor? Looks like the Next gen Corvette is going to have a motor the next gen M3 should have....

http://autos.yahoo.com/news/next-cor...turbo-v-8.html

Take a look at this...

Quote:
GM has approved the use of a very European-style V-8 that will be only slightly larger than 3 liters in displacement. The engine will be an overhead-cam, rather than traditional overhead-valve design, using a dry sump oil system that’s particularly well suited to high-performance road courses rather than straight-line acceleration. The engine is expected to feature a narrow 80.5 mm bore and a long stroke, more like a Ferrari or Lamborghini powertrain than the approach used for traditional Motor City metal.

A very senior GM executive also confirmed that the new engine will be turbocharged, which will help yield a broad torque curve and maximum performance under a variety of driving conditions. The engine is expected to deliver in excess of 400 horsepower, which means a specific output in the range of 125 horsepower per liter

Who'd a thunk it? Actually, this really is kind of shocking, if true. I'm no pundit, but it seems to me that people buy the vette for the big-ass, low-revving, high-torque V-8. I think this will definitely change the vette owner demographic. Not sure if it's right for GM to do, but we'll see.

Cheers.

It's not the motor that needs changing it's the interior I know BMW needs to improve on the dash but at least the material used is good. Love the exterior looks of the Z06 MONSTER.

Sounds interesting. The performance can't be denied but the rest of the car looks and feels like a piece of tupperware.

If the next Z06 performs at least as well as the new one then interior will be the last thing on your mind.

some people buy a corvette because it's a corvette, same with the M3.

Only the minority will be swayed by the engine, the corvette, z06 and grandsport are already being cross shopped by many buyers, its nothing new.

the z06 is a crazy package.

Actually, I've seen some of the mockups of the interior, and it's pretty stellar, as of now. Hopefully they'll make it as good as they're saying. Also, Corvette is losing that core 35-45 year old customer, and they want them... They want my age group, the 25-30 year old guys who go and buy a used M3 to buy a used Corvette.

But yeah, from what I've been told, the twin turbo V8 will most likely make an appearance. They kind of want a separation of the 'Vettes, so to speak. You can have a small V8, bigger V8 (most likely a 5.5-liter V8), and then modded V8s for the Z06 and potentially another ZR1.

they say they are going to fix the interior, I suspect it should be a good car.

I still don't get advertising 125hp/l on a turbocharged motor. That barrier was broken about 30 years ago, hell ferrari gets that NA nowadays.

If the ///Ms turn into low-revving lazy FI cars, and the vette gets a high-revving FI car, I will be switching flags so to speak....I buy cars for their hardware and feel, not the badge.

Cheers,

What makes you think BMW ///M is going to make a low revving FI car? I'll bet it will out rev the FI vette.

These new Corvettes are gonna be budget Ferrari's. Like a previous poster said, the interior will be the last thing on your mind if you are shopping for a vette.

What a bunch of morons... Did Obama approve this?

Exactly the kind of mindset that killed/Bankrupted the company in the first place.

To me...BMW really needs to be concerned with price.

When I bought my E46 M, the starting price was around 48K, if I remember right. The MSRP on my E92 M, was 58K and some change. Granted, I didn't pay MSRP either time, but after equipping, the E92 still came out close to 70K.
If they follow this trend and start the F3X M out in the mid to upper 60's...plus equipping...we're talking low 80K.
I love my M to death...but that's getting pretty close to pricing it outside the range I'd pay for one...considering alternatives at that sort of price.

We talked about this engine in the "M Division choosing between four possible engines for next M3" thread a little bit. Like I said there, it would be sort of like what McLaren did, but clicked down a couple notches.

Remember though, wild Corvette motor rumors are sort of a tradition. They come and go, and yet the tried and true GM small block pushrod V8 remains year after year. So file this one away, in the "highly unlikely" file. It is still fun to ponder such an engine, and it would be awesome if it came to fruition in any car from any manufacturer, but I am not holding my breath. I expect to see the rumored 5.5L "Gen V" V8, slightly downsized from the current 6.2L, but still the same basic engine architecture, pushrods and all.

10k rpm Corvette?

Hey guys, came across this on yahoo news.

http://autos.yahoo.com/news/next-cor...turbo-v-8.html

apparently corvette is planning on a turbocharged v8 that is high reving. 10,000rpm? if that is true, I think I've found my next car since BMW is going down to a v6 and bi/tri turbo. I hope GM makes this happen.

From arcaic pushrod engines to something not even a new $200K+ McLaren can't rev to? Oh, and sell it for $50K? Yeah, right!
Calling 10K rpm 'near' F1 (19K) levels tells you if you should take that 'article' seriously .

Whether it's archaic or not, the Corvette powerplant is still a well performing engine. It's more compact (if i remember correctly), lighter weight and achieves a greater absolute output than the S65, all while getting better gas mileage.
