It's just like the electrochromic rear view mirror where it dims a little at night so you are not blinded by idiots from behind that leaves their highbeams on.

Also, I just looked in the manual, it's on page 51.

Interior and exterior mirrors, automatic
dimming feature*

The automatic dimming feature of the interior
and exterior mirrors* is controlled by two photo
cells in the interior rearview mirror. One photo
cell is in the mirror frame, see arrow; the other is
on the back of the mirror.
In order to ensure that the system functions
correctly, keep the photo cells clean, do not
cover the area between the interior rearview
mirror and windshield, and do not affix adhesive
labels or stickers of any kind to the windshield
directly in front of the mirror.

when backing up it goes away so I see no problem with it... I actually love it because apparently there is a "lets put our high beam on contest" in NY.

My reading comprehension skills have gone to hell. I missed "exterior" when I originally read it. Thanks.

Gently pry off mirror glass with plastic pry tool. It is easiest with mirror in a fully titled position (don't recall tilted which way but you will figure it out). Then disconnect wiring connector that goes into back of mirror glass.

Also...

Remove existing mirror glass, sell for a pretty penny (they are quite pricey) and replace with much cheaper non dimming mirror glass.

I hate the feature...my wifes cheapo Peugeot compact has the same but comes with a 10 cent button to switch the feature off!
Plus it also has a switch to adjust the headlight beam height...you'd think BMW could through a couple of these simple switches at the M3.

Not sure about the M, but I see some members saying it's not.

I had this option on my 2006 E90 330i, and I definitely liked it a lot

I hate it when SUVs/Trucks/Vans get behind me.

For people who say they hate it!!! What is it that you hate? Seeing everything minus the glare if high beams. I don't get it. That's just the best example of how you can never satisfy everyone, someone will still find something like "nice cover when it's freezing with a hit cup of tea" annoying.

I think the OP is trying to say his is bugged possibly, and another member posted that it might be a glitch and/or a dirty cell (or two).

I personally never thought my mirrors were too dark, and that it altered what I was trying to see behind me in a bad way.

A great feature until you want to see if the car behind is a police car but can't make out anything but the dull headlights.

Well, if you are that paranoid about a cop being behind you - then you shouldn't be doing/owning something illegal in the first place.

EDIT: Forgive me, if I came off as a dick... I know there's a downside to not being able to distinguish exactly who is behind you, but I believe the benefits outweigh the disadvantages of having the option equipped on a bimmer.

Totally agree. The autodimming Side mirrors makes it very difficult to get a good few of close objects when reversing iearking at night.

I'd settle for a switch to disable it when I want to.
