Remove Side Grille Rear Cover for Air Vent

I've searched the forum and found no information regarding my question.

Has anyone tried to install the side grilles without the rear cover (middle piece in picture) for heat to actually vent out?

No reason for this since the wheel liner is there. You won't be doing anything for heat.
