Unhappy Lost a childhood friend in Iraq

Yesterday I learned that a child hood friend lost his life in Iraq. He was only there for 3 weeks.

Just want to say thank you all who were or are currently enlisted.

I don't want this thread to turn into pro vs anti war. That's not what it's about, so if you don't have anything positive to say ignore the thread. This thread is to remember the fallen and those continually serving our Country.

Merry Christmas and God Bless.

Sorry to hear your loss. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

It's people like him that allows us to live our lives in comfortable ignorance. You were fortunate to have known him.

"We live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. .........You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. ...And [their] existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post."
Truer words were never spoken.

You don't have to agree with the war to appreciate what our men and women in uniform have provided to this country. My grandfather marched with Patton's army through Europe, and some days I wish I would have served my country in a similar way. I say thank you to every soldier I can, and I'm always happy to buy them a beer. I'm sorry to hear about your friend, but I am thankful for the job he did.

My condolences for him and his family. It's happened so many times that a lot of people dont take notice of someone dying over there which is sad. Never forget.

Where did you find that quote from? It's really good.

He certainly did believe in what he was doing, where he was going, and what he was getting in to.

I've been told that he argued for months with his mom about going. She didn't want him to, he said he had to go. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact moment I saw him last. I do remember him being very sure of making a life long career in the military.

When I called my friend, whose family is very close with theirs, he said his mom saw two soldier silhouettes at the front door. She thought Jeremy was home to surprise her. When she opened the door she knew something was wrong.

It's funny what memories pop back into your head when things like this happen.

Thank you for your kind thoughts and words. Everyone have a great weekend.

Paraphrased from "A Few Good Men". He never said it, but I can envision those words coming from my grandfathers mouth.

My condolences, sadly I know how you feel all too well. My old squad leader and good friend, (in afghanistan 2005, he ran out to get me to safety after I was severely wounded, himself also wounded) was killed in afghanistan a few months ago. Nothing can be said that will replace the loss of a friend or loved one. But I focus on the great times we had together and cherish them. I don't know how to explain it, but I never felt he was truly gone. I could feel his presence as if he was watching over me. Call me crazy but thats how I felt.

Awesome man, thanks. Been a long while since I've seen that movie.

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm also sorry to hear you were wounded. Glad you able to make it home alive.

I know exactly what you mean. I've experienced more deaths in my 26 years than most do in a 100. Honestly, I'm almost numb when I hear about someone passing away that I knew. But when I hear it happen to someone I grew up with, a friend, it's painful. It's all that was on my mind since I went to bed last night.

Thank you for you service.
