Lightweight BMW M Engineering Concept Coming to 2011 Tokyo Show (not a 1M)
To support its return to the Tokyo autoshow in December after BMW’s 2009Hiatus. (the consensus is we will still be there , despite the tragedy)
BMW M will showcase on something that is outgoing but a current M car. But is an Engineering Concept that will show the possibilities of how BMW M can progress in relation to a full lightweight concept in bodyshell and chassis in the future. Normally it's key principle is of course Motorsport, but it is about giving you an insight into future application within a road car. It is to showcase BMW Innovation but as well as materials used in today's M cars such as Aluminium , Magnesium , Thermo-Plastic and Carbon Fibre in key areas , but also using the ideas in greater capacity and the technology from the BMWi programme which is why BMW has invested in it's future . Mass volume production of CFRP will be able to filter through to BMW’s core product strategy. It is more of an “Engineering and Performance showcase” than a visual one. Similiar to the Concept 1er Tii @ Tokyo 2007. it is not the 1M. It is not for production but to show a "bespoke" concept to show how things will progress in the future.

It's about time. BMW stated that the 1M would have all this "light weight material" and then never delivered. Both Porsche and Audi seem to be ahead of BMW here. Look at the new Cayman R for example.

Its fine to compare to the caymen but its a whole different price point. Do you think people buying 1 series or 1m's are people affording porsche's-not usually. If they used all the cool lightweight stuff they would have to charge a premium and defeat the purpose of the 1m which was an ENTRY level m car. Nobody will pay 70k for a 1m, 100k for m3 etc. Down the line when carbon fiber and such is much more largely produced and they have infrastructure for it, a much lower cost will be offered but they are 5 years from that happening atleast

Ha! Lightweight?
BMW doesn't comprehend what "lightweight" means I'd be very surprised if they get it under 3000 lbs

Notice Scott said it won't be related to the 1 ///M.
My guess is M3, or the travestite X6 ///M (sorry Kay Siegler, I know it is your personal car LOL). Maybe they were able to shed off 1500lbs off that piggie on roller blades.

BMW did. They replaced stamped steel with forged aluminum parts. Of course for the next version they will shed a couple of pounds total and brag and sell the world about making cars lighter. Lightning overweight cars will be the next big thing to sales pitch, just like peak hp #s.

So it can be implied that current BMW are overweight and hefty, and we have been over marketed and sold with these crap?

Sounds like nices promises (like Vision) but I don't believe it would happen.
That's be really nice but IMO BMW is trying to make geeks' cars rather than sporty cars. (from what I saw in Geneva... the 1M was almost hidden) So please do a Vision for sale with small wheels, narrow tires, compact engine, low center of gravity, and not tons of I-drive shit...

It's an idea lab and it works as pointed out by the Camino M3 as you call it... The M3 certainly involves what they are doing but it is not a pick-up.
Again. Let me make that clear. The M3 Pick-up is not coming to production , but it's genetic make-up especially in materials that are underneath is the key. It will showcase innovation with materials even more than a conventional M3 It is actually a prelude to the future in what will be attainable thanks to volume production of lightweight materials.

Lightweight is a concept BMW has gone away from. They make things lighter, but still heavy.
I know it has its purpose, but I find the m3 CF roof laughable. Make a bodyshell out of CF, and now we are talking. |

its not so easy to make cars light these days. most of the reason they are so heavy id b/c of all the safety regs from the government....and the fact that 'mericans like big ass cars...so these days all the cars that use lightweight materials also cost alot...b/c CF and alum are expensive... the government wants safer car that are more fuel effecient...that is a contradition....b/c adding safety features means more weight which decreases fuel econ...
a company cant just say "lets make it light!" and it happens....which im sure is the goal of BMW engineers....but they simply cant b/c of citeria that they have to meet. work in the industry for a day and you would understand

you guys are not getting it, BMW is going to show off for example a 1M that definitely weights in below 3000 because it will have a CF chassy etc. The single car will cost BMW a fortune because it is a single concept car. They will showcase the improved performance and weight of a car like this that will not see production as a CSL. Then it will be implemented in the i8, i3 and maybe next gen M cars.

It's a future lab... It proves that all the resources and investment put into BMWi at the expense of "image" only projects that competitors have invested in will be worth it in the future. Everyone Benefits...
Let the comments that BMW are on the wrong path for their future... end. This will show why BMW were right to focus on this path. As I said everyone including BMW M benefits.
