It is the age of the car AND the high mileage that are really driving the quotes you received. I bought my USAA warranty while still under the factory warranty, something like 38,xxx miles. Needless to say my prices were better and for longer coverage periods.

I also looked into a USAA warranty for my wife's 2010 Volvo XC90 at the same time. One model year older and more miles and the comparable coverge for her vehicle was $7,xxx versus the $3,000 I paid to cover my M3 for three years beyond the factory warranty...

Its the mileage. Quotes that I have seen for 2008-2011 M3s have been the same for these model years. If your car had 49,999 miles it'd be $3,600 (for 3yr 36k miles.) 50,000 miles and it jumps to about $4,600 (for 3yr 36k miles.)
After 70k miles I don't think Assurant offers any coverage beyond 2 years.
Prices most likely will go up after the New Year.

What I found odd is that the quotes are identical for both the M3 and 335...

I just picked up an e90 M3 last week, I already got my quote from USAA for extended coverage, now before I commit to it, what is the best way to check the amount of times the cars been redline, launched, etc. Also the car came with a Tuner stage 1 tune. Dont want to fork up the 3-4k for the warranty, something happens to my motor in the future and USAA/Assurant kicks my claim.

Not sure if there is a way to see how often the M3 has been redlined/launched (I know with a Porsche you can with certain diagnostic tools.) If anyone knows I'd be interested to learn as well.

I was able to speak with an Assurant adjuster regarding tunes and aftermarket items. Basically he told me that a tune, aftermarket exhaust, and/or oversized wheels will void the warranty. Now if lets say you have an aftermarket exhaust and your AC Evap needs replacing will Assurant deny it? I doubt it, but the adjuster was very vague when I asked that very question - he basically repeated his claim "if you have this or that on the car the warranty is void."
If there is an easy way for you to remove the tune, or turn it off so that BMW/adjuster doesn't know about it (if your engine went south) I think you should be ok. Newer Audi's for example - I think that the dealership is able to tell if their ECU has been previously tuned.

When I start shopping for M3's I'll mostly be looking at stock ones.

Bumping this thread; anybody have any updates on their experiences with USAA/Assurant?

I used to have a different third party extended on my 2011 335is, sold it without ever having to make a claim and cancelled the policy for the difference.

My '15 F82 still has the warranty through next year, so looking at extended plans that actually start from contract date. USAA's has one of the better prices I'm seeing against either BMW proper or (relatively) well reviewed outfits like Endurance & Warranty Direct.

I thought about getting a 3 year warranty when I bought my car. It still only has like 38K miles, but after 19 months of ownership, I'm rather glad I didn't. I haven't had a single issue so far, which is a far contrast from the Audi S4 I owned before it, which was in the shop on a bimonthly basis. I concede I could have electronics issues or a leaky DTC or the throttle actuators or, god forbid, the rod bearings go, but so far not getting a warranty has been the right move.

I have been pleased with them. Only material claim I've had was for my throttle actuators. Both were acting up but when I brought the car in the indy shop cleared all codes and ran the car to narrow down the cause. Only one of the actuators threw codes again but Assurant (through USAA) agreed to replace both rather than paying labor again to replace the second one at a later date. Frankly I was shocked and figured they would not agree to it but they did.

And they did this on a car that has obviously been modded, Brembo's, full exhaust w/ high flow cats, a tune to remove the CEL from the cats, a Dinan CF intake under the hood etc. Again surprised there was no push back despite the adjuster commenting on the mods. I know none of these mods would have affected the TA's but knew there was a chance they could have refused the claim anyway...

Having maxed out my policy with claims for TAs, fuel pump issues, a couple of leaky trans gaskets, and a blown motor, I could not have asked for anything more from Assurant. They always acted in a professional manner and keep the focus on their customer - me (and you).

Thanks guys, that's super helpful. Fairly sure I'll pull the trigger with USAA then; price-wise they're just in the right spot compared to much cheaper plans I don't trust or the way more expensive plans.

I'm going to try and call USAA to confirm, but based on what I'm reading in the sample contract & comprehensive plan coverages, the Navigation system & screen would be covered as part of the vehicle entertainment system and digital display, but any "perimeter warning system", which in our cases includes the backup sensors and cameras, aren't.

Is that your understandings too?

To honest I did not dive to that level of detail! I was concerned about potential major issues like rod bearings, throttle actuators etc.

Haha, right on. I've had mixed bag experiences. No issues whatsoever on my 335is besides an exhaust flap needing to be replaced. On my old 328 and on my father's E46 M3, the engine and drive-train work, whether warranty, DIY, or shop, was pretty ridiculous.

Since I'll probably rarely drive my current car too hard for too long, it's more all the little doohickies (i.e. technology and conveniences) I expect to start going bad over time.
