Not sure if this is an upgrade or downgrade on the exterior. The headlights are... But right rims/color AMG.. I see potential

Interior is awesome.. new class benchmark.

Mercedes used to have amazing designs with clear distinction between every model. Now everything just copies the s class. Main reason my family will buying a new 760li when it comes out as oppesed to the w222 s600 to replace our current w221. Going to the SD autoshow and sitting in a new 7 series basically locked in the deal. Other than that design flaw they are killing it with their interiors lately.

As do a 3, 5, 7 and an A4, A6, A8.

Well, none of the siblngs look strictly identical of course. Subjectively, one may say that the cars from one of these manufacturers look more alike than the others, but its a wash, really. And there's a reason for that: they've all determined that buyers respond best when their cars have a strong familial resemblance, so designers intentionally design them that way.

But Audi and BMW use specific design elements to make them each look at least a little different. MB is really just making three different cuts of wurst.

I stand by my statement about subjectivity. G11 casts a new mold, of course - you'll have to wait for the G30 and then G20 to see its twins.

Anyway, it's the engines that are what's really important, and I have been waiting for over two years now for details. Originally it was a lock that the M256 I6 would be in this car at launch, but lately I have heard that's not coming until later. And that aside, I have been intrigued by Mercedes sedan engine strategy ever since they suddenly yanked the V8 from the (non-AMG) E-class a couple years ago. In today's world, the most powerful C Class is more powerful than the most powerful E Class (again, non AMG, I'm talking) which seems like a rather surreal marketing strategy. Then you have the ancient-ish 4.7L V8 in the S-Class still, and meanwhile they've launched the non-AMG version of the 4.0L TT, the M176 (think I've got that code right), in the G Wagen. Yet that seems to have no future in the E Class either. So no 400hp+ V6, no 400hp+ I6 (maybe?), and no 400hp+ V8. Or something. Yes, there is the M178-powered E63 AMG @600hp, and maybe that'll be good enough. But I am just curious as to what the final story is with the non-AMG lineup.

Agreed, it's not like they haven't built plenty of I6's before, not sure what the hold up is.

I agree. All the germans have had a visually distinct design language across the model line but there was always character lines specific to each model. A 7 series doesn't look like 5, and a 3 series has different front end. Audi is coming close but there is still enough visual cues that the average person can discern.

This looks exactly like a C class except for a slight reshaping of the front vents, the interior is similar but I see a clear difference. I just showed two pictures (C and new E) to my coworkers, they thought I showed them the same car.

The previous, pre-facelift E-class looked much better than this boring copy of the C and S. Hell, even the AMG W211's had a more emotional design.

They're going in the wrong direction.

Same thing happens all the time with the 3 and 5 series, especially when people see them from behind or rear three-quarter. The fact that the 5 doesn't have the integrated grill-headlights currently is a bit arbitrary, based on product design/release timelines, not a deliberate attempt to keep it distinct. The next one will get that design feature.

I agree with that. The S Class coupe and convertible are the poster children for this design language - they should have made the sedans carry the look in that same exciting way. Even if they had to make the sedans more coupe-like, ala Jaguar. I suppose they bump into the CLS market if they do that though, which is unfortunate.

Oh, I agree that the F30 and F10 are nearly impossible to tell apart from behind, and we have an F30.

The only thing I don't like about the interior, not sure why only the E-Class has it, is the passenger-side dash area. I always hated that in Audi's because it looked so cheap and looks like there is an overhang over the trim instead of it being flat or better integrated. That is screaming for a leather dash. Otherwise, it's the best looking interior in its class like the C and S-Class.

Yes F-series looks little more distinct but wait until G-series BMWs will appear (3, 5 and 7), I'm sure they will look almost identical. At least MB got interior right.

The soft points look great but I still hate the screen(s) and the blocky appearance around them. Looks horrible on the S Class and Audi does this sort of thing much better.

I'd rather have a car that looks similar, than the new 7's butt ugly exterior.

I hope the 3 and 5 look nothing like the G-series 7.

You have to dig down deep into the fanboyism to find this front end appealing?

Personally I think the new 7 looks great, especially in ///M-Sport trim. its all a matter of personal opinion, maybe we sould ask Chris Bangle his opinion lol. One thing I wish for is a slightly smaller set of kidney grills, but doesn't matter that much. Other than that, go see it in person. Pictures dont do this a justice

The front end really bothers me , regardless of which trim level I'm looking at. The headlights are just so proportionally small to the giant grille.

And as someone said, the car looks horribly dated already. Personally, I find the Benz sedans (all of them) terribly boring. Just looks like a melted blob. The coupes look so much better, and I don't understand why.
