Here are the first four. Kind of regretting not getting the BE Bolts. I had forgotten how tedious torque/release/torque/release/torque gets.

Seems as though they are OEM bearings and he's commenting on the process for OEM bolts.

Yep. BE Bearings going in. At least I'm doing this on an engine stand.

Also, FYI, the Gear Wrench 80588 set, which seems to be stocked at Advance Auto Parts, gives you the 6" torx sockets needed to pull the oil pan.

I did the oem bolts once. Probably won’t do them again, but you saved $200 so that’s like $100 per hour for your trouble.

The remaining half.

Hardest part was getting the engine flipped back over. This thing is top heavy!

Your engine blew right? Your disassembling the blown engine or doing bearings in a new one?

I’m prepping a 13.9k mile engine to go in next weekend. I’ll tear down the old engine once it’s out.

The point of the BE ARP bolts is to limit the bore distortion that can occur with the OEM bolts. It's not for ease of assembly- that's just a bonus. Excessive bore distortion plays a part in the premature wear of the bearings.

Those bearings look as bad as mine did at 2x the miles.

Pretty amazing how bad they look given the mileage. Have you reliably confirmed the mileage on the engine somehow? Seeing these makes me think i should look at doing mine with 43K miles.

I saw the donor car (and actually pulled a few extra parts off) and have a carfax. The engine is also *extremely* clean.

Put them in an envelope with the documentation showing they are off of a 14,000 mile motor and mail them to BMW with a note inside that says "please open at the next shareholders meeting".

That's not necessary my friend . BMW knows better than us what is going on ...
In 2013 BMW had to replace four 2013's . S65's with minus 15K miles on it and under BMW warranty !
One of the four was only a few months old and the owner had barely 6K miles on it !
Once the engine was replaced by BMW he dumped the car , and lost 40% value ...

Well i can't say I'm not disappointed. I was honestly expecting minimal wear based on your description of the donor. Has anyone else pulled sub 30k mile bearings? If so, how did they look? That thread in the engine section is too long to navigate quickly.

these look much better, which is why it's so intriguing to see such huge variance in wear rates even on similar mileage cars.

so are we still to believe tolerance stack is the compounding cause for these wear patterns, along with less than ideal bearing clearance? Could it be that factory assembly of the connecting rods (i.e. torquing of the rod bolts, specifically) was done improperly on some cars? I mean tolerances are typically engineered to ensure that even under max stack one way or another, the end result is still acceptable.
