Man Down! 2008 M3 Rod Bearing Failed

My 2008 E92 M3 with 55,000 miles just spun a bearing on the way work Friday morning... Just bought the car 2 months ago... No warning except for engine tapping, which turned into a knocking sound by the time I could get to the BMW dealership 5 miles away...

Build Date 01/2008

For those of you wasting money on Blackstone reports, I will tell you to save your money because my report from 1000 miles ago scored very well with only moderate metal indicators...

Sandy Sansing BMW has the car currently, and they have already indicated that it has indeed suffered a catastrophic rod bearing failure on cylinder #6 and a engine replacement is needed...

I bought the car with 49k miles on it, and I have a extended warranty good until 2017 through Premier Dealer Services Auto Warranty company....

Right now, Sandy Sansing BMW has contacted my warranty company to let them know that my car needs a new engine...

Not sure what to expect here!?

I am worried that my warranty company will try to push BMW to put a used engine in the car rather than a new engine...

Anyone have any good advice here?

Car has a very detailed service history with BMW dealers only, and it has been babied its whole life...

Used or new, any engine is better than The one in there. Good luck.

All they are required to install is a comparable used engine. But if so pay extra for a preventative maintenance rod bearing change now.

Sorry to see this! Hopefully the warranty company realizes that there's just a little too much risk and unknowns with a used engine. Please keep us updated. And good luck to you!

Sorry to hear this. But I am glad you have extended warranty. These make me kind of scared of keeping my car. I just got Black Stone lab result and it was great, but you had an okay lab result as well and now you have the issue.....
This issue is not as common as the throttle actuator, O2, etc. issues, but definitely the decision making one for most of us that were thinking about keeping the car for a long time.

Please keep us updated.

Sorry to hear about this!

Just to clarify, did your engine suffer a crank or rod bearing failure? Your title says rod bearing, but your post says the dealer found a crank bearing failure.

My '09 E92 M3 has 112K miles, and last week I just got back from a full day at the NCM motorsports park. On Saturday I'll be at road america. I got it at 95K miles last may, had Three track events last year, planing on 6+ this year. Certainly NOT all cars will experience this failure. OP, good luck.

Definitely not normal as the ticking sound is random. I'm no expert in engines but that is a ticking bomb right there.

OP, sorry to hear this happened to you but at least you have warranty. I can't imagine this happening to a new owner with no warranty.

I have CPO warranty good through 2017 as well but I'm definitely getting my bearings done before it runs out. Until then, I'm going to drive it like I stole it but there's just TOO many cases reported for it to be a minor issue that only affects a small # of cars. To those of you still in denial, this can happen to you at any time. I never bought into those blackstone reports, and OP's car being an 08 should tell you those reports are nothing but false hopes. OP, hope everything works out for you!

Yes refurbd engine and new exhaust assembly was shipped from Munich and installed by my BMW dealership. And my old engine with 40,000 km's plus exhaust was shipped back. Warranty was up on July 2015, replacement done January of this year. Got another two years unlimited mileage to boot.
