HUD Retrofit
Is there any way to retrofit a HUD to our cars?

Doubt it... Don't think there is enough room in the dash for the projection unit and the wind shield requires a special coating. I know in the 5er you order a special wind shield that comes with the coating. Can't get an OEM 3 series wind shield with the coating as far as I know and wouldn't know where to get it done...

the coating is just a matter of selecting a swatch of tint. At least that's how it was when I retro-fitted my rice rocket civic 12 years ago. it was awesome, BUT not colored like the new one that is in the 2012 model. So, well, then I guess I could be wrong and maybe its not just a "coating" but a special element of the glass for the "3D" effect.

If you can figure out the proper coating/tint, it can be done. The biggest issue is space in the dash for the projection unit. Nothing is impossible as long as cost is not an issue!

The coating would be the least of your worries.

The HUD is a pretty big unit going down into the dash. Bunch of mirrors, etc.. I think that risks in doing this far outweigh the rewards, not to mention being cost prohibitive to begin with. The dashboard alone is thousands of dollars.

I just read Pioneer is coming out with something early 2012 and Delphi is making a color laser HUD that clips on your sunvisor and projects the image on your windshield. They will use a special piece of 3M film so you don't need to change the windshield

HUD is pretty gimmicky. I had it before in an old car. It was cool at first to see all the data on your windshield but after a while you don't pay much attention to it.

RPM was much nicer to see in a half circle that fills up (green --> yellow --> red), than looking at the tach. MPH listed right there. I coded in the turn signals too. Having the navigation directions there was my favorite feature.
