Don't take this the wrong way. I'm against all the nanny bs such as banning 32 oz soft drinks. People can make their own decisions. Me having to pay for it does get very frustrating though.

Drive like a maniac, pay more for auto insurance.
People who have a body fat of 60% should pay more for their insurance. Sadly, all of those who top the charts above 400 lbs that I've taken care of have been uninsured or on Medicaid. Every last one.

I'll get off my soap box now.
While I do not disagree with your premise, most should ponder why they do not see any "old fat" people (~60 years of age). They almost always take care of the problem themselves by that age.

Even Chris Christie has reached that revelation, no matter how good of "health" his doctors claim he's in now.

The obesity rate for Caucasian adults (over 30 BMI) in the US in 2010 was 26.8%
The obesity rate for Black adults (over 30 BMI) in the US in 2010 was 36.9%
The obesity rate for American Indian or Alaska Native adults (over 30 BMI) in the US in 2010 was 39.6%
The obesity rate for Asian adults (over 30 BMI) in the US in 2010 was 11.6%
The obesity rate for the Hispanic or Latino adults category (over 30 BMI) in the US in 2010 was 31.9%
The obesity rate for Mexican or Mexican Americans adults (over 30 BMI) in the US in 2010 was 34.1%.
The obesity rate for Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander adults (over 30 BMI) in the US in 2010 was 43.5%

I see also a high correlation with laziness too. Just stereotyping, nothing racial intended.
The larger correlation should be on based on finances and culture. Good food, particularly vegetables and fruits cost more. You have to also account for the fact that many foods or types of cooking are cultural. To blame it on your perception of some group being lazy or not because they don't share your ideals or priorities is short sighted.

Up in NY there is plenty of obesity but I was amazed at how much worse it is down here. I've had patients that can't fit in my exam chairs and I usually have a few per year that I have to take to the main OR because the outpatient surgical center deems them too high risk. I operated on 2 people in 1 week with BMI's over 80. It takes work to get that fat.
Keep white rice out of this. The Obesity rate for asians is only at 11.6%.

Old fat people stay home because they can't get around due to severe joint problems. Spend some time in an ICU and you'll find that there are plenty of old fat people. Now 80 is a different story. Not too many make it that far.

BTW, on a semi-related note, I have discovered something very important. I have many patients in their 90's. All, and I mean ALL, have one thing in common: no more than 6 regular scheduled medications. When I'm 89, if I'm on 7 meds, I'm going to stop one of them no matter what.

My avoidance of those 4 foods and refined sugar has nothing to do with my background in medicine. It's from working in gyms for years, personal training, and spending 5 days/week in the gym.

Rice and beans are great when loading and building. Off limits when cutting.

+1. If we look at some places with white rice as a primary diet such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan for example, we'll see that obesity really isn't a problem.

Considering there are not old fat people in "assisted living facilities" if they are plenty, they all cannot be living at home, so where are they?

I changed to brown rice years back .. can't eat the starchy white stuff unless I don't have a choice - you can feel your glycemic level shoot up

war on saturated (animal) fats was stupid.. it's alot better than high frutose corn syrup which makes everybody into michelin man and rots your body from the inside
animal fat is not harmful, humans have been eating it since they were in caves - if you eat too much it will just pass through you, unlike sugar which kills your <insert pysiology phrase> system

the fda and food industry replaced animal fat with sugar

Why can they not be at home, like the vast majority of other 70 year olds?

Assisted living facilities are comprised of a small percentage of the geriatric population; it's expensive. It's also a lot harder to get in without money.

As for correlation with laziness, you ever looked at France or Greece.....or even Mexico?
This guy knows what he's talking about. The less processed our food is typically the safer it is to eat. It is the FDA's job to ensure our food is safe to eat. As with any government agency they don't usually do a good job of that especially when big corporations are involved.

All of the FDA big-wigs used to be executives for those corporations. Monsanto, ConAgra, Pfizer etc. all send their boys to administrate the FDA and make the approval process quicker. That's also why you see all of these drugs being released which cause widespread problems in patients. The FDA tests they are supposed to undergo were either over too quickly or non-existent so that the product could come out faster and more money be made.

Exactly we aren't ruled by our government we are ruled by corporations that control our government. They don't care about us they only care about making money look at some of the ingredients that are added to your food and ask yourself if it sounds safe to eat.

All the bad foods came about because no one wants to cook any more. They made is so easy to just stuff your face that people have all this free time to eat more.

Bingo!

I am guilty of having a fast food burger once in a blue moon, but the .99 burgers and ease of not having to cook a dinner is an obese persons paradise.

The food that is the worst for you is also the cheapest, hence obesity in poor folk populations.
