Are you under the impression that not filling your car completely is saving you money? There's actually an argument to be made that it's costing you money. Filling your tank part of the way results in more frequent fill-ups. More frequent fill-ups means more distance driven out of your way to the petrol station. Not to mention the horrible waste of time.

I had a business partner who did the same thing: refused to fill his car all the way because it was "too expensive". He finally changed his ways after I shamed him at every opportunity

I actually had a same convo with my mother today. She heard it from mechanics, and I told em that it won't make a difference. I think mechanic tries to tell them about vapor argument. We all know that it is pressured. Only benefit from having a full tank of gas is (as you mentioned) less trip to the gas station.

It actually saves me money.
I simply drive less , and make un-necessary trips. I tend to plan it.
I fill it up at local gas station at the supermarket/walmart. Fill up when I go grocery every week.
