I used to run 285/30-18 on my E46 front and back. Worked great though the front stuck out just a bit.

I would like to run a 9.5" rims for the front of the E92 and go to the same 285/30 setup for autocross use. If anyone finds info about front offsets before I do please post it.

As to the question about 11" rears. Yes it might cause understeer, but the car would still be faster with the extra traction. It would just need a different driving style.

I'll probably run the 285/30-18 for track use. But I don't like that tire for the street as its considerably shorter than stock and makes for a very harsh ride.

Look at tire rack for your tires of choice. Each will be listed with an allowed rim width under the specs tab.

Understeer is caused by too much traction at the rear axle caused by overly wide tires thus the front end is the first to slide. Many E46 owners who track their cars use the same size tire front and back to get a more balance turn with less oversteer. Plus it allows for swapping tires front to back, reducing tire cost for track days. Only on very slow corners at the track does rear traction become a concern due to too narrow rear tires, in my experience.

While thats true, I suspect most E46 M3 owners that are running 9.5" all around today could be faster with a 9.5" front and 11" rear setup.

A stable car (understeer) is easier to drive at the limit. Also adding grip never slows down the car. All else being equal.

Enigma - I don't know if 9.5/11 combo would be faster or not. I think there's certain advantages to a 9.5/9.5 combo, but I don't know if it would translate to a faster lap time. Perhaps a 9.5/9.5 combo would just be more fun at a driver's school where lap times don't matter because the car would be more balanced. I think we'd have to ask the club racers who have more experiece in experimenting with different wheel and tire combos and then driving them at the limit.

I have spacers on my car 12 mm front, for one reason only. Coilover strut housing does not clear stock front wheels regardless of height adjustment.

As long as you use quality spacers (rogue engineering makes good hubcentric) you should have no problems. Over time though, your wheel bearings will probably have somewhat reduced life and different track front to rear will play games if you are trying to dial in oversteer/understeer.

If you have a choice avoid them, but if you must, try to get something less than 10mm preferably.

I agree with that advice. H&R makes good spacer, as well.
