I used ramps at the rear, and jacked the front fromt the central jack point and supported the front on jack stands at the suspension arm pivot points. I noticed when the filter is removed there is about 1/10 liter of oil in the bottom of the housing. I used my MityVac to suck it out, though you could use an old turkey baster. I poured about the same amount of fresh oil into the bottom before reinstalling the filter.

I put in 8 1/4 liters before restarting the car. It took quite a while to get a reading, and was then showing near the bottom of ths scale with a "+1" notation. I added another 1/2 liter, but was unable to get a different reading in the garage. I'll check it again after driving.

The car always seems to run better after an oil change--pyscholocical, I know, but it makes you feel good.

Edit: The electronic oil monitoring system and lack of a dipstick continue to frustrate me. If the system were secondary, that's fine, but why do away with the dipstick? After putting in 8.75 liters (stated capacity is 8.8) and driving a couple times, the system is still telling me to add 1 quart -- would you trust it? If it had a disptick there would be no question. Just really stupid!
What jack did you use to reach the center lift point?

If you back onto ramps, there is plenty of clearance to reach the front lift point with a standard floor jack, or you can jack each side in turn.

You will also enjoy the car a lot more and also understand the complexity and the individual components at the heart of the car. At the end of the day, money is better in your pocket than in the stealer's. A little bit of elbow grease and minor cuts won't hut you.

When I had my E46 the car was completely maintained by the dealer. But with the E92 it has been a different story. Thanks to the DIY guide on this forum and encouraged by others' experience I took the plunge and realised you don't have to be a master tech or a qualified mechanic to change oil, brake oil and pads, spark plugs etc., on an /// car. Good luck

Exactly how do you "try out" an oil. How are you going to know if it's as good as the Castrol?

So I see some conflicting information in this post:

1. Everyone starts off saying 25NM on the oil filter cap...however then it was posted that it should be 40 NM? The cap on mine states 25NM so should I stick with the cap or tighten to 40NM?

2. Multiple different sizes apparently on the drain plugs. I read 4 different sizes in this post.....M6, M8, M12 hex patterns and then T-40 torx????...can anyone confirm torx or hex pattern? I slid my arm under my car, but did not have it up on jacks so I was unable to see if it was torx or hex pattern, the 6mm hex does fit, but there is some play. So I checked what size a T-40 torx is and apparently it is 6.65 MM. ...See link below...
http://www.newmantools.com/tech/torxspecs.htm

I am guessing this is the correct size because there was a tiny bit of play in the 6MM hex...which may be the reason behind stripped drain plugs I read about...?? Unsure...

Going to look under the car tommorow to see if it is Hex or Torx....of course as everyone already knows there is a difference between a hex pattern and a torx pattern.

I am 99% sure it is a T-40 torx. I could see how you can get away with using a 6mm hex, however. People have left comments on my video saying that I was incorrect about it being T-40 torx, that it really is a 6mm hex.

1. I've purchased one-day subscriptions to BMW's TIS to get the exact torque specs and steps for various procedures, including changing the engine oil. The torque spec for the oil filter cap was revised to 40 nM according to TIS. If you have any doubt and are concerned, I recommend you get a TIS subscription ($30 for the day) and confirm for yourself; that's what I did.

2. The drain bolts are definitely not Torx, although a Torx bit may work. They are hex bolts, although I could not tell you the precise size. I changed my oil just two weeks ago and on my 2011, the bolts are hex. The stripped drain plugs are probably due to over-torqued plugs. I highly doubt you'd have problems if you should use the torque specification from TIS.

Just changed my oil today, it's definitely 6mm hex for the drain bolt, torqued to 25nm.

hey guys, is the oil pan drain bolt the same p/n as the front sump's drain bolt?

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...=11&fg=10&hl=3

Real OEM doesn't diagram both bolts, but for the bolt, they say I need x2. My bolt is stripped, so gonna need a new one.

I would not run 5w30 in an E9x engine. 10w60... TWS is best but I wouldn't hesitate to run Mobil 1.

No, 10W-60 only. Not worth the risk.

I buy 1-day subscriptions at: http://www.bmwtis.com/ for $30 per day.

I print everything I can in a 24 hour period and keep them in a paper binder.
