Stainless Steel Brake Line Upgrade - 4 or 6 lines?
Im due for a brake flush and I figured ill replace my 7 year old lines with new SS lines while im at it.
I ordered the Stoptech lines from Turner Motorsport which is suppose to be 4 lines but they sent me a 6 line kit that was labeled as "private label SS Line kit for e9x M3" Anyone here know the difference? Why are there 2 extra lines? Should I ask for a replacement for "Stoptech" that i originally ordered? I have stock calipers and rotors.

One for each of the four corners and the last two are for a soft sided part of the lines going to the back brakes. Just follow the rear lines forward and you will come across the area.

So this "generic brand" SS kit is more complete than the Stoptech?

I got 6 lines with my Stoptech kit. The 2 smaller rear lines were a PITA!

I did not use the two small SS lines that came with my Stoptech BBK based on the comments on this board of what a PITA they were to replace. In light of the fact that I think about 85% of your braking power comes from the front brakes, I did not think it was crucial to replace those two short lines in the rear with SS. I just replaced the four longer lines with the ST SS lines on each of the four corners.

You will want to change the rear inner lines. The whole point is to eliminate the expansion of the rubber lines. So the four outer lines aren't flexing, so that just means all the expansion is happening at the rear inner lines.
It's difficult and a PITA to do the rear inner lines on floor jacks and jackstands. You can use a flare wrench with the ratchet attachment or a really short wrench and enjoy 1/8 inch turns at a time. With a lift this its really easy. For a road car, I don't think you'll feel much of a difference. Track use you will feel it as you brake deeper. Brake lines with Fluid at the track - a more consistent pedal. |
