2009 M3 (e93) REAR SPOILER HELP
I have recently become an owner of a 2009 BMW M3 hard-top convertible. One thing it lacks is a rear spoiler. I don't want anything over the top but I want something there. It seems that anything you do will void the warranty (I wanted to modify the engine but don't want the added risk). My service advisor said that I have to get a stick-on spoiler if i don't want to void the warranty. I was told by my car guru that that is not true. Does anyone actually KNOW THE TRUTH?
Also, does anyone have any suggestions as to which spoiler I can get delivered in Manhattan? and as to which spoiler looks the best? |

You must be kidding!?!?!?! Your SA told you that putting a spoiler on your trunk will void your warranty? what? your engine warranty? your tranny warranty? Thats WHACKKKKKKK man, do yourself a favor and find another dealer/SA. Sorry about the rant, but thats pathetic!

You won't void the warranty with a spoiler. The only thing I can think of is a dealer may charge you the cost to remove the spoiler if you return a lease with it but it's a pretty subtle upgrade, they would probably thank you for adding it on to better help them turn the car around.
I would do something like this, similar to the M3 lip but a bit more pronounced. Don't go over the top on the car IMO. |

Edit: I remember someone posted about an E93 Alpina spoiler..imo that was the best option at the time. Last edited by bunnn; 02-08-2010 at 06:44 PM.. |

I have a 08 M3 E93 and I have changed many things...like change the exhaust and wheels...still my warranty is good. I called BMW customer services (not the dealer) and asked if I change the exhaust or wheels would it void any part of my warranty and they said no... I took the persons name and made note of the time and date of the phonecall.
If you add a spoiler to the trunk lid like you want to then it may void the paint warranty on the trunk but no other part.

if you change your pants from Levis' to Walmart $5 jeans, does that void the warranty on your leather seats?

The only argument that I can think of that would support the assertion of the dealer would be the installation of large / heavy spolier that would affect the unique way that the trunk opens (cantelevers backwards) and possibly affect its performance over time.
A small lip should be fine, in line with the above concerns. I have contemplated this, but not sure how it would look with sharkfin mounted on the trunk.
