Expensive rims, and cheap ass tires?
I'm seeing quite a few people who go all out and buy pretty expensive wheels
Only to mount cheap ass tires on them Can someone please explain why someone would do this? Why not spend half the money on wheels and half on some decent tires? All that stands between you and the road are 4 small contact patches Why gamble on them? Rant mode off

I'd guess it's a question of $$$ at the end. I agree though, best to get good tires and good wheels. I went ARC-8's, not too expensive but JWL tested, track tested, look great, strong, etc. And PS2's. Good set up for me.

wats a good tire? example of expensive rims and cheap tires?
why do ppl do this? cuz they can get the expensive rim to show that they are "ballin" then get cheap tires cuz nobody cares about tires.

You don't need drag radials for street use. Something that rides good works fine for the street. I am sure most people have a set of rims for track only use with good tires.

What are some "cheap ass tires" to you?

Nanking, General etc
I'm not saying everyone should go out and buy Michelin pilot super sports But at least stick to the brands that have been around for a long time Michelin, pirelli, continental, dunlop, bridgestone etc

But if you are not pushing your car at all, hence accepting something that just "rides good" And you're skimping on the tires Why did you buy an M3 in the first place? It's like the people who bitch how the M3 requires premium gas Seriously? The difference on a full tank of gas between regular and unleaded is about $3

Never understood this either. If you have the money for nice wheels, you should have the money for nice tires...

i did it backwards and got better tires than wheels. Its a situation I would like to remedy but I simply can't find a wheel that I like the looks of for dual purpose. There are lots of expensive wheels out there that I like because of their weight savings and strength but then the looks suck so I can't pull the trigger. Unfortunately deep concave, light weight, high strength, and cheapish isn't out there.

I get annoyed when people stress the importance of their performance oriented car with big wheels, or good track wheels
Then they turn around and throw some Nitto Invos on them |

But MANY on this board are all about the looks and bling. I'm ok with it as long as it allows BMW go continue to make M cars, but it's sad that BMW seems to be catering to this crowd now with all these new "//M" cars that really are NOT true //M cars.

I think V12s are a pretty cheap tire
I didn't think so before... I thought they were amazing, I swore by them... then I drove using AD08s and RS3s Now V12s are garbage to me. so are most other tires...PS2s included

I'm not in an autocross or a track every day, I just drive to work and here and there hit that highway exit at double the posted speed limit. A $2000+ set of tires that require replacement every 13-15 months is not for me.
The only time that I found that the "cheap ass" General Exclaim UHP was not great was at an autocross. Other than that I still think that they are one of the biggest bang for the buck out there, with great traction, handling and most important to me due to my location -its hydroplaning resistance is absolute. I mean, these suckers go thru water like nothing. Then I found the Continental DW and the DWS which are much better than the Exclaim in everything, for around $100 more per tire. I used the DW in my old M3, my girlfriend VW CC uses the DWS. Again, ride, handling in both dry or wet exceed my expectations in the street. Where they greatly exceed the Exclaim is in noise levels; compared to the Exclaim both the DW and the DWS are virtually silent. I bought last week a brand new set of 20" PS2 from a local person selling them for less than half the price -or some $200 more that what I paid for the last 19" DW set-, so this is the very first time that I get a "real" deal set of tires for any of my M3 since 2004. Which it will be great so I can finally find out once my M3 arrives if money really buys happiness on tires. |

There have been threads where the new almighty PSS's got corded the first time at the track. For a street car the Invos are a pretty good tire. Now that my tires are pretty much gone, well the rears are now at 14k miles on the car I will probably go to a Mich PSS or the A008s. However, if I had to I would have no issues going back to a Invo. I think they are better than the CS3s that came on the car. Dave

You can get either the ad08s or the re-11s for roughly the same money and they are far superior in performance.especially dry.

I went cheap with VMRs and bought AD08s. Pretty sure my tires were more expensive then my wheels?
