Ha. X5 official fuel consumption would be 23 mpg on the smallest engine ( 16.9 mpg on the X5M). His trip summary shows 22.4 mpg so.. Any SUV is going to have poor aerodynamics at 65 mph on the highway compared to a sedan. For 2 people and the added fun I would take an M3 over a 4,700 lbs pig on a road trip.

Some people were asking me about the total cost of my trip.
I drove 4950 miles, $900 of gas averaging 22 mpgs. I was also loaded with about 300 lbs of stuff, plus my wife was also in the car (weight withhheld) Hotel/lodging is the largest expense you need to account for. We were doing this as a vacation, so our average lodging prices were about $125. The "commuting" legs where we only stay one night and leave the next morning, we spent about $90 (Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn is HIGHLY recommended b/c of free breakfast). Our most expensive hotels were around $230 range in the national parks. I used about 2/32s of tire wear on my Yokohama Advan Sport My car ate only 1/8 of bottle of motor oil, so negligible there. I also put on a clearbra - $500 as DIY (though there's cheaper options like the 3M spray and peel film) I got 1 body damage on my sideskirt from hitting road debris, and I got a small chip on my hood about 1 inch above where my clearbra coverage ended. To fix the paint damage on side skirt, I'll likely elect to replace the entire side skirt and repaint ($700). I recommend buying the roll on temporary film and cover your entire car in it like a condom. |

Fellow M brotha,
It was great seeing you in Yellowstone that day. I ran into another E90 M3 before you while I was still in Cali, but he wasn't a forum member and wasn't nearly as cool. Great road trip post also. I intend on doing a similar write up of my trip, but I still don't have my stuff back from the movers so I don't have my good computer to do all of my photo work with. Later this month I will be posting up my write up as well. Hope you and your M3 are doing well. Mine got beat up pretty good, but then again I was doing 170mph in some spots. Stay tuned in the M5 section.

sweet. looks like it was a lot of fun!!!!!!!! and as for the bugs haha. i have the same issue here in sc. the bugs are terrible. i do a lot of interstate driving and my car gets smothered in it. it looks like my car committed homicide against a bunch of bugs. the worst state for bugs though in my opinion is florida.
