Ohlins R/T... anyone have any good input about street use?

Hey Guys- Looking to see if anyone is using the new Ohlins setup primarily for street use. I used to have a Stasis Ohlins setup on an Audi RS4 and it was much better on choppy beat up roads then the stock setup. Also, faired well on the track. That would be perfect if the R/T setup is somewhat similar for the M3.

Thanks!

You should ask the guy that created this thread:
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showpos...42&postcount=1
He's running the springs that came with the R&T kit + Vorshlag camber plates.

Also, Harold at HPA has installed at least one set (with Swift springs) on his own 1M or a customer's M3.

I'm running the R&T suspension on my R56 Mini Cooper S and it feels great on the street, especially compared to the stock suspension. Running JRZ RS1s on my M3s.

Thanks, Rolf. I talked to Harold extensively about the R&T kit and they are at the top of my list as far as coil overs. I love that the height adjustment is separate from the spring preload. I will more than likely go straight for the Swift spring upgrade, but Im doing more research on camber plates. I hear good things about Vorschlag but Im thinking of going the Ground Control route. I have used their camber plates previously. They were quality and customer service was great.

Haha...I'm not Rolf

I'm running GC street camber plates with my RS1 dampers (as well as with my previous Moton and TCK setups; also have used their 60 mm and 2.25" setups) and I've had zero issues with them - no noise, no failures, and easy to adjust.

Are you going to use GC street or race camber plates?

Sorry about that
I plan on going with the race camber plates, isn't the difference the ability to be able to adjust caster?

No problem

Yes, the GC race plates have the ability to adjust camber. They use a monoball in their race plates compared to a sealed radial thrust bearing in their street plates which is similar to what BMW uses on the front top strut mount.

Have you verified with GC that their race plates will fit/work properly on the Ohlins front strut?

I have not verified, but in Bimmerworld's website they ask what brand of shock you want to use. I don't think it'll be a problem. It seems you are the resident suspension expert around here. I have more questions as my next mod will be coilovers. Pm sent.

I just got Ohlins Road and Track with Vorshlag camber plates installed last
week. This is my first experience with aftermarket coilovers so I can only
compare to stock zcp. The difference is substantial, on tighter track
settings the car feels good and tight with much better weight transfer
and less roll. There is quite a lot of range between hard and soft settings.
The dampers respond quicker and soak up bumps better than stock.
I've been enjoying it for street in medium range at 9 clicks
back from full tight. Track wknd coming up so looking forward to see how they perform.

I've had one issue with install that I'm still trying to sort out.
After hitting a pothole a clunking sound started on drivers front when
weight shifts. Vorshlag folks said its a typical problem that the top
nut isn't tight enough and needs impact gun using pulsing method
to get it down, or possibly it's the end links. (edit2: the clunk is back)

I drive daily on the street a lot and tracking once a month,
seems like the perfect crossover compromise for me.

Cheers,

Axis

So your getting better ride quality and better handling with the ohlins. Nice.
Prob gonna pull the trigger on them then. You feel the camber plates are a good addition as well or if only street use it's not needed

Ohlins R&T will have more compliance than OE, but with a lot more control. There should be at least 6-8 guys with them on their 1M or M3, but not all are forum posters.

Top nut is where I would check first as well.

Double check your sway bar endlinks, make sure all 4 nuts are tight, and some loctite will ensure they don't come loose again.

How hard did you hit the pothole? Sometimes the camber plate bearing can get damaged if the impact is severe enough.

Ya I think this is the issue, it was a pretty hard hit.
I spoke with Vorshlag guys and organizing bearing replacement with them. Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Hi,

I'm looking to get a set of the Ohlins R&T coilovers.

My car is a DD and used 95% on the road with a few track days mixed in.

I don't really want to be constantly adjusting my settings and I would hope to be able to find a set-up that works great for fast road driving and is good enough for the track.

Do I need to get adjustable camber plates or can I manage without them?

Cheers

Camber plates make a huge difference, I would definitely get them if you plan to use the car on the track even occasionally. You need at least -2.5 camber to avoid excessive outside tire wear on the track.

Thanks Alex.

Do you think if I fitted the Ohlins kit I could maintain my stock Competition Pack height? I really don't want to lower my car.

Maybe you don't have road humps in New York...;-) (Not sure what you call them in the States but they are put in to slow traffic down on minor roads and we have loads here.....)

Oh there are PLENTY of them here. Not to mention the craters that were left after our never ending winter!
