E90 Tint - anyone WITHOUT Tint Protector NOT having the scratching issues?

Obviously this has been discussed before, but I would like to see if anyone has had a tint installed on their sedan WITHOUT the Tint Protector, and NOT had the scratching issues on the front windows. I would like to see if this is a sporadic issue, or is it a 100% guarantee that it'll scratch without the moleskin installed.

Thanks for the help.

There is some speculation over on E90post that MY2011 may have felt-lining on both sides instead of just the outside, negating the need for Tint Protector. Help anyone?

Ok so my E90 M3 has had Tints on her for about a year. I have scratches on EVERY DAMN WINDOW. It's horrible. Tint places obviously have no idea about this issue. Maybe someone will let the whole "Tint" business know about this issue!

Wow, Never heard of this. I have a early 2011 E90. had tint, but its been off for a little while now. Didnt even know there was such a thing called Tint protector, and I used to install tint and stereos.

When my tint was on I never saw any scratches. But Ill have to look to see if I tint again.

I just looked at my 2011.5, I didn't see any felt on the inside lining, its just a very soft rubber from what I could tell.

Definitive, thanks for the insight with your early 2011! You'll find quite a number of people that feel VERY strongly on this issue around here. In threads like this:

I have a 2011 E90 M. I got my windows tinted and got a couple fine scratches the very first time I rolled the windows down and back up. I have a tint protector but just haven't had time to install it.

I just double checked my 2011.5 e90 and it does have the felt on both the front and back side. I guess that's good news for 2011.5 owners, at least there is a solution for others as well.

Nice! I assume you're a September 2010 production, or later. How exactly did you check? Just pull back the rubber and peer down with a flashlight? Window open or closed?

Yeah I just got the car dec 24th. I rolled down the windows and felt both pieces that the window rubs against when going down. They felt the same like felt.

That is the top seal you're looking at. There is another seal farther down in the door and that is the culprit in these scratching cases. Can you look down with a flashlight?

I'll give it a look tomorrow. Didn't think there was one deep inside the door

no felt protection on my 2011 e90(Oct). had tint placed along with felt protection with the installer. cheap and effective. why take any chance of damaging the tint job.

Why take the chance? Because it costs more for the install. And my tint guy says he does lots of E90 tints for my dealership without issues. But that's also just on the rear windshield and rear doors.

Having said all that, I've just ordered my Tint Protector, just in case.

Just curious how do you install the felt protection? I tried peeling back the top seal a little bit this morning with the window down but couldn't really get it to open much..

Apparently the door panel needs to be opened up. Not speaking from experience of course... I plan on bringing it to the tint installer to do. He says this is also an issue on MBs, Lancers, and a few others.

But there's another thread open about the sequence of the felt and tint install, so we better follow along with that one too.

2010 e90 here with no tint protector. I went with 35% f1 pinnacle and didn't install the protector. I've had the tint on for about three months now and I only have one scratch on each of the front windows. Though they can't be seen normally only through direct light. I bought the moleskin to install but the tint guy said I already had the required felt on the car to get tint. They offer lifetime warranty and wouldn't give that warranty unless I had the proper felt which he claimed i had. I'll live with it for now because I roll down my windows everyday literally and it hasn't gotten worse. Definitely got luckier than other forum members

So I checked, and my early 2011 (first 2011 e90 on the west coast) e90 does have the felt strip on the outside and inside of the window opening.
