S65 amg
Drove an s65 amg for the first time today. Unbelievable torque monster. OMG! 700+ lbs torque. Not smooth acceleration at all, and I realize this is not a car for the track but without having to say this it would walk all over our cars in a straight line. Still like my m3 more

Even mr JC of TopGear argued the amount of torque, it's simply too much.....
And an M3 beats any Merc any day in my book...

I think I remember that. Stability control kept kicking in and out....but it was crazy fun in a straight line. I mean whiplash inducing thrust in a luxury sedan! Wouldn't trade it for my m3 either.

You drive a M3, so you're familiar with that feeling, right? Only added feature of the Merc is electrical problems.... not?

Yes had mine since 8/08. Was simply commenting on the felt difference in torque. It doesn't feel the same as the m3 w more than twice the torque. Yes I realize it's much heavier. Still feels a lot different when the turbo kicks in on a v12.

You truly think an M3 beats a CLK AMG63 Black Series? GTFO.....The Black thumps it in every conceivable way --- looks, performance, sound, build quality

I believe he is referring to the above mentioned sl65 amg. Some of the mercs, esp. the Black Series (both sl65 and clk63) are def. a WHOLE different ball game.

++1. I preface this by mentioning that I don't support street racing and know that the m3 is better on the track (as noted in my previous posts above). A buddy who has an e90 M3 (DCT) got tempted by an sl65 amg on the interstate a few months ago. He said he had zero chance and he was going wide open. It passed him like he was driving a Toyota Camry. Of course he may have been exagerating somewhat, but based on my experience today....Lesson: if you mess with one of these things on the street, you are gonna get ripped a new one by a boat on wheels.

True. I'm M3 all the way and in no way am I saying the merc is a better car. In fact. I have never been a merc. fan. The Sl65 is all brute power, with little balance. Comparing it to the m3 is like comparing apples to oranges. However, if you are comparing it's straight line performance, it's obviously faster than any stock BMW that I have ever driven, including an m6.

When I had my 6 series when it first came out, an S class MB pulled up next to me at a light one early morning. It stopped short of lining up and was slightly behind. Thinking that it as a standard S-class, thought it was going to be a driver's race.
When the light turned green, we floored it and I kept up with it for all of about 15 feet. After I saw the back, I realized it was a 65. At the next light, spoke with the owner, pretty cool guy. Never ran into him again, even after getting the M5, which may have given him a closer race. Those 65 AMGs are insane.

Overall i just don't appreciate Mercedes design, so i choose a BMW over Mercedes any day. Of course there are exceptions and i'm not trying to compare cars by specs and features, just taste. Let's say i have my own version of TG's coolwall, some cars just don't do it for me. Having said that, i am getting more and more interested in the incredible feeling all that torque must give....

Was the OP really trying to compare a $200k monster luxury sedan to $70k M3? Come on people. The S65 and M3 are two completely different cars (if that isn't obvious). No one would be comparing the two.
What next? Trying to decide between a Bentley and a 911?

OK, first anyone can put a Twin-Turbo V12 with 4,000 HP in a car and make it go fast in a straight line. Let's see ANY production Mercedes handle around a bend.
I've had a W211 E55 and W209 CLK550 and they were both GREAT cars but in typical Mercedes fashion just don't handle that well compared to even a stock 335i or 135i. You can't really compare an M3 to an S65 - completely different cars. One weights 30 tons and has a 600HP motor and is meant to be an amazing highway cruiser the other is high-revving, track bred monster that is one of the most amazing cars of all-time. They both serve an entirely different purpose and have an entirely different audience. If I'm 60 and want to go fast in a straight line (foot in mouth), the S65 is a good idea. To someone who mentioned BUILD QUALITY of Mercs vs. BMWs, I don't know about that. I've never sat inside a CLK63 BS, I'm sure it's very nice. The build quality on my 2005 CLK550 was GREAT, the build quality on my 2007 E55 wasn't as great. My father's had almost every generation S-Class for the past 20 years and I can tell you one thing for certain: Merc build quality has slowly but surely been going down. I remember the solid build quality of the W140 (we had three of them), double-paned glass, the car just felt so solid. Now, the W221 is still great, but there's more plastic inside of it than a Chinese toy. Maybe because they build some of these S-Class models in f-ing Mexico these days. M3 vs. S65 - no point in comparing the two.
