Satin Black Powder-coated OEM Exhaust

Hi Guys -

Since I am selling my Gintani I knew I couldn't go back to the OEM exhaust with all of its ugliness, so I had the entire exhaust powder coated satin black. I was looking for pictures of this before I had mine done and really couldn't find any so I thought I would post a picture so if anyone else is thinking about doing this they will have a good idea of how it will turn out.

I have to get use to the small tips again as compared to the Gintani but other than that I am very pleased with the result.

Looks good! How durable is the powdercoating?

Looks good.... but can you take another pic further away from the car to see how well the satin black blends in with the car?

Powdercoating should be more durable than the rattle can spray job I did on my OEM exhaust. I used a VHT matte black spray can to hide the muffler. It's been holding well so far...

Looks very good. Definitely curious about the long term durability of powder on the exhaust. Get that sucker hot with some aggressive driving and let us know long/longer term. Did they use an special heat resistant material?

Hi Guys -

Here is a pic from further away as requested of the exhaust. So far the finish looks as good as the day I got it but it has only been a couple weeks. Time will tell but so far so good. The exhaust should come from the factory like this IMO. At least the canister should be black.

... and just for comparison sake here is how the Gintani looked. I achieved basically the same look (the stock exhaust fits the car a bit better I think in terms of proportion of the tips) but I do miss the sound a bit.

I rattle canned mine with black BBQ grill paint. One year and one MN winter later it still looks great. Much better than the rusty stock exhaust. My thinking is that if my paint fails I can slap on a fresh coat.

Did mine with flat-black ceramic spray paint, muffler removed and properly done, both sides, well masked, etc. Looked like it was done at the factory. I recommend using the VHT high-temp instead. This one requires a special curing process, and it's not 'powdery' like mine, which comes off more easily if rubbed (had to clay the damn thing). Muffler is practically invisible now, except the tips, which I like in chrome.
Also replaced the ugly orange hangers with a bit shorter black ones from PepBoys, and muffler is now perfectly tucked up IMO. A must 'mod' for the few of us who don't want any extra noise inside the cabin.

Good ideas. It probably should have come from the factory painted. If you're going to stay with the OEM exhaust this seems like the thing to do.

The stock tips do look like they fit the overall dimensions of the car better than the Gintani. But otherwise, I'd think the Gintani are better. Why are you guys are selling them?

Cheers.

Just getting old I guess ... In reality, I found myself taking clients out to lunch, etc. more than I thought I would in this car and I just didn't want the attention and questions I was getting anymore about the amplified sound. Just needed to go back to something more reserved.

Nice touch! Why not try a darker shade?

Your muffler looks to be sitting too close to the bumper now. If you're running your car for extended periods of time, you could possibly melt some of your rear bumper.

That's what I was wondering too. Can we get a closer shot?

Curious what it cost to have a shop do this...? Of course, I'm in New York, so it's all relative... Maybe I'll just do mine myself with hightemp spray paint...but the long-term durability concerns me.

I just sent an email to the shop that powder coated my wheels. I'll let you know what his estimate is.

What temperatures do our exhausts see? He mentioned that normal powders are rated to around 400 degrees F, but that he has a color (not sure if this is a trade name or what) called Pipe Black that is a matte/flat black and that is rated to 1300F.

If the price is high, I will probably take the high-temp spray route, as well. If it starts to wear, you've always got steel wool and more paint .
