Blue Painter's Masking Tape Bra?

Has anyone taped the front of their BMW using the wide Blue Painter's Masking Tape, which is readily available at Lowes or Home Depot, for the drive back home from PCD (or when you Track your car)? I have a 1,900 mile drive and want to have a custom clear bra (full hood) done on my M3 when back home; ie, PCD option is only a small partial hood and on AW the line will really show (ugh).

For those of you who have done this a few questions:
  • Did the masking tape stay down when driving at up to ~100mph?
  • If not, how would you recommend I tape the front of the car (eg, 1st vertically top to bottom, then horizontally at the top, middle and along the bottom of the front of the car)? [yes, I won't block the hood opening areas]
  • Did the making tape pull off without leaving any residue marks?
  • Did using it in fact protect the paint from rocks, bugs, etc?
  • From your experience driving home, would you use the tape again or was it just not worth the trouble?
  • Any questions I should have asked for which you have a good answer?

Thanks in advance for the assist; it is appreciated

I was thinking about doing this as well for my 600 mile trip home from my PCD. I have seen it done at the track many time and they go over 100 mph. It comes off no problems as long as you don't leave it on for more than a couple days. I think it says on the tape how long it is good for.

I considered this... considered getting clear bra done on the way home too... but, in the end I decided not to be quite so obsessive. I pick up the car the end of Oct... I'll get it detailed and then clear bra'd when I get home. If I pick up a nasty rock chip or two... it will hurt no doubt, but I'm hoping I don't.

If you leave some extra distance between you and the car in front it is completely avoidable. Common sense always helps too lol. GL

Problem I've noticed is that even when I do leave an extra distance between myself and the car in front of me, some high-rise truck will fly by or pull in front of me and kick-up a rock or two
Note: I had a 3M ClearBra on my 335i and it did save my paint several times

1. Why would a truck be passing you ,your driving a M3 lol..and I almost always keep at least 1 lane of space between me and them when passing..

Maybe I should restate it to almost completely avoidable..never know when kids will throw rocks at your car

There's an old thread on here where a guy completely covered the front of his car in the blue painters tape...do a search. I remember alot of folks making fun of him. It was in the media/pictures threads if I recall.

Remember, break-in period. Gotta keep the rev's below 5,500 and speed below 100mph, and vary the speed every ~15 minutes. Oh hell, maybe I should just pay to have it trucked the 1,900 miles

Its the same car. I think he put the black tape on top of the blue painters tape to help with the huge contrast of Black and light blue

AZ, have you considered staying an extra day and getting it clear bra'd independently by a local place? Otherwise, tape 'er up and she'll be fine.

I'd definitely worry about this, too. I assume you'll be coming back via I-10. There are lots of construction zones and trucks, which makes for a bad combination as far as your paint is concerned. Pretty much unavoidable.

Actually, I was going to come across on I-40, because I-10 looks like it dips too far South and hopefully fewer construction zones. MapQuest recommends the I-40 route; not sure what the M3 Navi would recommend. Anyway, I have the 1,200 mile service scheduled in Oklahoma City, OK, on the way back.

OK, Problem Solved; No masking tape required!

Steve Treece from Charlotte will go to the PC and install everything prior to my PCD. He will install a full front bumper, full hood, full fenders, back of mirrors, door edge guards. The reason I didn't purchase the PCD offered clear bra is because it was only a partial hood and partial fenders, and I had that done on my 335i and the seam showed and looked tacky (ugh). [BTW, I'm purchasing this M3 vs Leasing, so I'm more motivated for better care of it]
