why not remove the air filter - the leaf should be trapped by it and then remove the leaf?

This is a bit off topic (sorry), but have you guys seen these grills? They're not secured down and you can just take them out. I wonder where these lead ... there's on on each side.

I just went and looked at my car and I believe they lead to the side vents on the fenders to help evacuate the hot air from the engine compartment.I took those covers off and cleaned them as they were plugged with leaves.
My next step is take the air box cover off and check for crap in the filter assembly.

And finally (a bit OT) but confirmation that the side vents ARE FUNCTIONAL. As I have said all along... I certainly saw these gratings myself but did not realize they connected to the side vents/gills.

I thought that's where air was going in for the AC, since I couldn't see any other place for it.

Not so fast! The "vents" pictured are soley for the purpose of draining water from the area where the wipers and HVAC air intakes are at the base of the windshield. Not sure if they are connected to the side grilles, but you will see if you look they are totally separated from the engine compartment by a gasketed sheetmetal division.

Check both sides (I'm so lazy...) and check carefully! From the big initial "press release" with all the details on the car we were told,

Quote:
Air intake gills in the front side panels
I would be doubly surprised if they were non functional both for BMW M holding form well over function and then to top it off lying about it.

On the E46 M3 one of the side vents was for cooling the heavy duty heat generating electronics (the ECU).
