From my exchange with the Ohlins Automotive Product Manger in Sweden and Performance Shock Inc., who designed the M3-specific mounts for the TTX, there is no plan for any type of standard boxed Road &Track kit for E9x M3.

PSi's kit will be custom built with valving and spring rates of your preference, and it will NOT be a boxed R&T kit. But it will be pretty much plug and play.

Plus, why would you want a standard R&T kit anyway? It will still cost just as much, and when you spend that much money, don't you want the freedom of choosing your own springs and mounts??

Looking forward to pricing. I've been considering going with KW Clubsports, but will wait to see how much an Ohlins setup will run me.

rldzhao, I may need you to help me pick out springs and mounts as I am more a driver than engineer

EDIT: Just read your post about going from 4 to 5 figures. More than Motons is too much for me, I'm looking to upgrade to a GT3 in the next few years, no need to throw too much cash into the M3

Here's a picture of TTX 40 used on the M3 GT2... with a 800# spring I believe...

Check out the spring bar link which is basically a cantilevered beam that you can rotate to adjust for stiffness.

A-arms!! So they don't even use a strut suspension on the front anymore. Do you know if porsche also gets to switch to an a-arm suspension for their GT2 competition cars?

cool picture! thanks

Yup BMW gets away with many things compared to the production car, especially in ALMS... not so much in European LMS.

RSR's front is still McPherson.

Hi rldzhao,

is there any Ohlins authorized installer/distributor,
who can make a custom mounting kit using Ohlins TTX for any car ?
I mean, Ohlins do not have kit for every single car out there,
so if someone, for example want to put an Ohlins
front and rear suspension for Alpina B7 (street use)
is this possible ?
Thanks

Nice pic

That looks like the same AP Racing Caliper that NASCAR uses

Of course it is possible, but really no point to use racing dampers on the street.

can you please kindly explain further ?
is it because the racing dampers range of adjustment is not soft enough for street use ?
or is it because the racing dampers range of movement is too short for street use ?

or is it related more to the matching spring rate availability for street use ?

or is it related more to the short life time of the racing dampers if used on the street ?

do they require more maintenance if used
for normal driving ?

Thanks

1. it takes a lot of time and effort to develop mounts from standard dampers.

2. racings dampers typically have shorter travel (except for rally cars) than factory cars.

3. racings dampers requires maintenance at a much more frequent interval.

4. a key advantage of racing dampers is that they can provide consistent damping characteristics under the slightest displacement. For a street car you are looking for a lot of displacement for comfort, so basically you won't be able to realize the benefits of a racing damper at all.

rldzhao,
Thank You so much for your very detailed response. I really appreciate it.

Just two last question,
what kind of mileage intervals that the Ohlin Racing Dampers required between maintenance ?
and what kind of maintenance ? is it a complete rebuilt to replace the seals ?

Thanks again.

It depends on your resources and track use.
A typical pro race team will rebuild their race dampers after every race (approx. 200 miles) because they can and have the resources.
You don't have to rebuild that often - but when I ran race dampers on a street/track car I would have them rebuilt/re-valved every 2500 miles.

It was a pain in the ass - not to mention the stiff/hard uncomfortable ride when faced with 95% of uneven streets and bridge dividers.

I have the TTX shock on my 848. Love it! It would be nice to have an Ohlins suspension kit available to consumers at a decent price.

^ Yes, what would you like to know? We have run the TTX kit on Pauls car at two different events, and the difference between that and our previous JIC kit is outstanding. Literally night and day. We work directly with Performance Shock, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Was the Ohlins kit dyno'd on an e92/e90m3?

If so, where?

What do you mean by dyno'd? We have the kit on our E92 M3 race car right now.

Maybe he means a shaker rig as opposed to a shock dyno.

I mean - what development testing, specifically on 'our' cars has Ohlins done aside from handing shocks to dealers to install on their in-house or customer cars.
