I did not ask you what kind of car you wanted or what companies that you looked at but since you mentioned it...Well just because those are known as the high end luxuries in America you think they are the best ones? You must buy the most expensive camera, watch, etc etc. Just because something is more expensive than the other doesn't mean it is the best. but thats still not my point... my point was just to say consider the G8 as competition not to purchase. |

I buy what fits my budget, my performance expectations, and luxury amenities, for the record I only buy Canon SDs or DSLRs, even though a camera is hardly a fair comparison to a car.
The reason why they are on my short list of luxury high performance cars is simple, they are good at it, GM is not. If I wasn't in the market for luxury Pontiac might make that list but as a GM it would but my last pick. Like my mom always said, we aren't rich enough to buy crap. |

exactly - most people do. and if your budget can afford an M3 you arent even looking near a Pontiac. but if you can only afford 30k then maybe you will ....thats why I say they are not in competition with each other.

Hmmm, if I wanted one of these, I could get one at a stellar deal (..due to friends/relatives working at a GM plant). Yippee!

The phrase "poor man's x" is used in many auto mags, there's nothing wrong with it. So adjust your panties and move on.

Its meant to compete against the upper end of the 5-series, not the 3-series

The G8 is a pretty sweet car. If I had to spend money on a G8 or M3, surprisingly I'd buy the G8.

Sorry, brand me an elitist.. regardless of specs, performance, etc., a M3 will always be perceived as a better car. Image and perception have an absolute foothold on "value and worth" and don't even have to be based on real facts.
I'll be willing to bet a lot folks will be able to build up a G8 to outperform the M3. Sorry, but there is already a massive aftermarket for the Chevy V8 and a ton of mechanics who know what to do with them.. anything and everything is readily available as pretty much a bolt on. Bottom line though no matter what folks do to these things, it will still be a Pontiac... and I'm sure they'll show up in droves telling us how we wasted our money on our M3's. |

Latest Motor Trend labeled the new Mazda 6 as the "poor mans Lexus". based on your username I would bet that a lot of other things will shock you such as gay marriages, a possible black president, and no more slavery. Also, net worth doesn't dictate what a person should drive, personal taste and need does.

Pontiac G8 had the potential to be the best performance sedan under $35,000. Considering the kind of cars Pontiac put out in the past, this is a major major upgrade. Everything in this car--saving one critical flaw which I'll address in a bit, is spot on. There have been at least two comparison tests where the G8 handed the Charger/300 twins their a**es. Car and Driver recently did an impromptu comparison between the G8 and the BMW 550i .. Their conclusion? The 550i is better, but certainly not $30,000 better, which isn't really a negative for BMW, but a positive for GM.
The ONLY thing that prevented this car from being the true muscle sports sedan that I've been longing for is a lack of a manual option. The manual option will be only be available on the upcoming GXP model, which will be priced nearer $40,000. Mind you, that's still a very good deal (what other 420+ hp sports sedan can be had under $40,000 with a stick?). Unfortunately, for those of us who don't make six figures, that pushes the G8 out of our price range. However, there remains the slim hope that GM may make the manual available for the 2010 MY .. but I wouldn't hold my breath. P.S. The M3's competition from GM will be the CTS-V. Judging from what I've seen so far, it's turning out to be one helluva car. |
