Engine Malfunction with DSC and DBS Alert after Pothole
My 2008 M3 took a hit at a pothole yesterday. Immediately following the hit, I got the "Engine malfunction! Reduced power" warning. RPM's limited to 4k.
I pulled the car over and noticed the following alerts on the display as well:
With the vehicle in reduced power mode, I was still able to drive it around like a honda civic. I hooked up my BT code reader and got the following codes:
I cleared the codes, but they returned, even after a few restarts (with 30 min in between). Vehicle still runs, but constantly in reduced power mode. I inspected the rims for any displacement but they look to be intact. I'm not a car mechanic, but I have a feeling the pothole hit may have loosened some component somewhere. And thus, something that is an input for something else is causing all of these faults. No issues with the car previous to this mishap. Thoughts? |

If you search for the codes you listed you'll find that one or both of your throttle valve actuators are shoot which makes sense considering the age of your car.
There is a good DIY on how to change them but the parts will set you back mucho $$$. Good luck.

Thanks for the response. I looked at the codes and it pointed me to the throttle actuator as well. However, car was running fine until it hit the pothole which makes me question having to replace the part. I wonder if it would be something like a loose wire/harness somewhere?

i had something very similar happen to me a few months ago. i was driving on a highway and hit a slight bump which triggered a check engine/reduced power. my codes reflected a vacum leak and went away after restarting.
i think you may be on the right path that something got loose after the pothole. hopefully it wasn't harsh enough that the throttle bodies skipped a tooth on the gears?

Actuator was on its way out, the pothole was either a coincidence or icing on the cake. I would suggest replacing both actuators.

SOLVED.
Thought I'd close up this thread in case others have the same problem. Dealer replaced both throttle actuators last night even though only 1 was acting up. Part number was 13627838085 (Genuine BMW) - Siemens VDO. |
