Tacho spy and usefulness on rod bearing analysis

Wondering if when this is available it could finally be a tool for measuring the relative age/condition of poor engines without disassembly....

http://www.tacho-spion.de/en/der-tacho-spion

As I understand it uses ultrasound to determine the engines relative wear compared to it's actual age and I wonder if RB issues would show up without needing a full tear down.
Clearly would need calibrating with cars pre-teardown and bearings ranked for good/average/bad and if it relates to var harmonics I would guess non SC cars only

What do you think?

Chris

That's really interesting ...
I never saw it before , and I would love to know if it detects by sound our S65 bearing wear noises too .
So , if this works it would be a great sound tool for our S65 engines.
Thanks for sharing .

Their representive is looking for more test partners. They've no one in the UK yet but I could see on their site they have many test partners in GER and some prescence in USA amongst others.
A message has also been forwarded to Michael who is their lead ultrasound engineer/designer and i hope he opines as to whether their expected vs actual results can be tuned towards specific indicators of impending failing bearings before more obvious signs.

Sure there are threads with removed bearings .
Here is Malek's thread with pics from removed bearings in bad condition , and Malek has vast experience...knowledge of our S65 engines and replaced of course many bearings => pages 3-4-5-6-7-8 will show you some pics http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...t=malek&page=3

Not that I now of. It would be a scary thread since most of the bearings replaced show excessive wear. There are a handful of posts that showed normal wear for the mileage but the majority I've seen showed a lot of wear.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."
