Why does one get a coupe instead of the convertible?

Hi,

today I was wondering why most of you M3 owners decide for a coupe instead of a convertible? I see that the coupe has a CF roof, but on sunny days the convertible sure is more fun...and in winter it should not be a problem because the E93 has a hardtop...
So what are the advantages of the coupe?

I am asking because my next whip is most likely a M3...

Weight!! For a sports car, the Coupe is already quite heavy. Getting a convertible M3 doesn't make sense if you're looking for performance.

1. Weight. The convertible is over 400 lbs (!!!!) heavier and is noticeably slower in terms of acceleration

2. With the top up, it is still doesn't look as sleek as the coupe

3. I did the convertible thing and discovered that I am really not a convertible person. I absolutely love having the top down for about 30 minutes. Then I want it up. A lot of noise when you drive fast, and you get hot and feeling tired with the sun beating down on you. I also feel very "naked" when sitting at a traffic light and it is an unsettling feeling for me. The windows in the coupe are large enough that it gives you a pretty open feeling, however.

Interestingly, I always used to be a sunroof fan. After owning a convertible, I am not since I discovered how little they really add.

1.Weight/Speed
2.Handling
3.Look
4.Gas consumption
5.Noise (Wind noise, and I used to have a lot of rattling noise from the top of my e93)
6.Price
and more..........

I think the e93 will suit you just fine but don't get the M3, get the 328i.

All good points above.

If you plan on doing serious track events, coupe is the right choice.

I like the sportier look of the coupe, don't get me wrong the convertible looks good too with the top down. With it up I think it does't flow as well and I just love the CF roof

You get a convertible because you enjoy the top down diving experience.
The convertaible is heavier and you can definitely feel it but it is a very high performance car. Also the convertible is not allowed on many tracks. IMO it is the only 4 seat retractable hardtop on the market that does looks good with the top up.

Shadowline trim > Chrome trim. And all the other stuff people already said. It's a looker with the top down, but it's a little awkward with it up...

As others have already said, it depends entirely on your priorities: If max performance is your main goal, the coupe is a better answer.

Cheers

If you can afford a coupe M3, you also can afford the convertible. M3 is the sports-coupe benchmark all around the world.

M3 is also (imo) for BMW enthusiasts and most of us don't go with the convertible. Also I think convertible is more "old people" stuff, open the roof, and chill. But this is my opinion and I respect to those with other opinions

I am not a fan of any convertible that did not start it's life as a convertible. The convertible M3 seems like an afterthought to me... "Huy guys, we built us a sweet machine here. Now chop the top so we can sell more." You lose many aspects of the M3 when you go convertible.

It's one of those rare situations where my preferred option is cheaper, more fun and better for you. It's as if a cheeseburger were the healthiest food you could eat.

To explain further: I don't like convertibles - they lack stiffness, are heavy, loud, have more creaking/rattles and I do not like driving one with the top down anyway. If I want open air motoring, I'll ride a bike. For a car, I want a stiff and permanent roof over my head - preferably without a sunroof - ideally with a roll cage. For all those reasons, I'd buy the E92 over the E93 if it were $9K more so the fact that it is actually cheaper is that rare icing on the cake I'm referring to above.

So what are the advantages of the coupe?

I am asking because my next whip is most likely a M3...
1. The roof shape. They had to flatten the roof to make it work which most people consider unattractive.

2. Performance & weight, the weight difference is significant enough that the M3 convertible is actually slower in the quarter mile than the 335i.

3. Racing, most race tracks will not allow you to race a convertible.

4. Cost, the convertible is more expensive, some people just don't think it's worth $9,000 for a folding top. That's 15% of the value of the car itself. You can buy a BMW convertible for that money if you want.

5. Cargo Space, the convertible does not have folding seats and the trunk is much smaller. This was a big issue for me, as the coupe is my daily driver. You can fit 2 full sets of 19x9" wheels (think racing wheels) in the coupe without passengers and with the rear seats folded down. You'd be lucky to fit one set of wheels in the convertible.

6. Noise and comfort, the convertible is just much more harsh than the coupe. This was a big issue for me because again it's a daily driver and the convertible was just at the threshold where it annoyed me.

because vert=girls car

Kidding but in all seriousness it seems like guys driving verts are much more "accepted" in SoCal than here in Ohio. I know a ton of car guys here in Ohio that would agree that a convertibles are for girls. Just the same way that a VW Beetle or a Mini Cooper is. Stereotype yes but it's there.

Curious, What are some examples of convertibles that started their life as convertibles?
