Varis Rear Diffusor....$$$

Hello,

After seeing IND's recent project ive fallen in love with the rear Varis diffusor piece(underneath the car). I called to place an order and the price was just really unexpected to me($4,000). Which I think is ludacris! Im pretty sure there will be a lot of interest on these forums for this piece. Is there another company that makes a similar designed piece for a cheaper price tag?

thanks

That is pricey. Is the varis piece wind tunnel tested?

Not really all that surprised, seeing how most quality parts that come from Japan are in that ball park. I love that diffuser but not very practical for our roads.

I highly doubt anything other than OEM pieces are wind tunnel tested. Wind tunnel testing is extremely expensive, like more than most of these companies are worth. Even professional racing teams like Rahal Letterman and Porsche's Flying Lizard does not have the allowance to properly wind tunnel test and mainly rely on computer aided design. Not saying it won't create downforce but when I see companies claim downforce etc. or wind-tunnel test, its seriously laughable. Many of these so-called aero-tuning companies will say that its track-tested... simply means its just, tested on the track. Highly doubt they went back and re-do the R&D based on wat happened on track..even if it were its very minor. The best part is that video Arkym posted on track their "AERO M3" slaying cars like R8 and GTR, is just misleading. Not saying Arkym products are not awesome which i think they are, its just very misleading in my opinion. That said, I love the varis piece and would buy it if it didn't hang so low and at $4k, i'd be scared shitless to scrape it.

A diffuser like that will do very little if anything in terms of adding down force. For a diffuser to work properly you need a gradual but significant expansion of the cross-sectional area underneath the car. This allows the high-velocity, low pressure air flow under the car to smoothly transition into the ambient air behind the car. Such a device would require a much more significant amount of space than is available on the M3. This is also why M GmbH chose a wing instead of a diffuser on the GTS.

i've heard rumors in the past of Varis wind tunnel testing. But this was 7 years ago... don't know if they would still be doing that testing since it's so expensive.

"all of varis pieces are wind tunnel tested and therefore are functional. but i have to admit they look great too. "

That diffuser actually comes in two pieces. E46M3 has the same diffuser system, where it comes in two parts. This goes without saying price differs between E46/E9xx.

This part covers the exhaust and comes in Dry carbon and CARBON. Price difference is about $350-400USD depending on FX.

This part is like a Vorsteiner Diffuser Type 1. I am not saying they look alike, but that is where the diffuser would fit. Carbon only.

Since all of you E90/E92 M3 generation owners have the latest M3, if you have the spare money, cutting some drinks and parties, VARIS is highly recommended. I wish I can go back in time and do up my E46 M3 with a VARIS bodykit 7 years ago.

Who makes that s2k part?

The whole under section is nice, but since most get this part for looks, I doubt many would justify the extra cost.

Oh and about exhausts, compatibility issues with the varis diffuser and certain exhausts is more than likely.

Contact Difflow which makes diffusers for Lotus's. Im pretty sure theyre based here in Socal. They can make it out of aluminum though, not carbon, and could design it to the number of elements to your choosing.

Street cars have very little to gain from aero under the car.
You have to be low enough, create downforce with wings and be travelling of speeds above 100mph to have any advantage.
All the examples above are "flat-floor", which helps the air move faster under the car ...and the diffuser fins create a stabilized channel for the air to escape ....essentially helping high-speed cornering stability. None of the above cars are going to be taking 100 mph turns.

The real advantage of a diffusor is with a "tunnel-floor" car - think diffusor fins, tunnels and channels from the front to the back.
That's when you gain downforce at lower speeds too.

So that IND e92m3 has very little to gain from that $4k diffusor system ...except the occasional "wow" from an onlooker.
It is beautiful tho
